Job description

Overview
This individual will join the team that is responsible for civil litigation that arises from the P&C (Agribusiness) division of Zenith, and will NOT be involved in Workers Compensation litigation.
Will serve as a primary in-house handling attorney on litigated and non-litigated insurance defense matters, with the responsible portfolio of cases being determined based on potential exposure and case complexity. The insurance defense practice areas will include civil personal injury, auto accident, and premises liability claims. The incumbent may also assist in evaluating and potentially expanding the in-house handling of the Company's insurance defense matters. The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Responsibilities
  • Handle all phases of pre-litigation and litigation activity on insurance defense matters, including fact and expert investigation and analysis, pleading practice, formal discovery, motion practice, expert discovery, formal and informal mediation/settlement practice, trial preparation and trial.
  • Possess and consistently perform with the subject matter expertise generally required for successfully handling insurance defense matters. Possess the ability and willingness to expand the requisite experience and expertise in handling insurance defense litigation.
  • Advise the Company on all legal issues and legal strategy considerations relating to the litigated and non-litigated insurance defense matters.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively in all formats and situations (e.g. verbal, written, client meetings, claims file conferences, etc.). Identify, understand and meet client, claims and internal communication expectations, as well as strategic litigation management expectations.
  • Effectively utilize technology and collaboratively work with support staff to ensure efficient case management and productivity.
  • Demonstrate consistent awareness and strategic input on changes to the law, technology, local rules and other procedural requirements, or other aspects of the legal and insurance industries likely to impact liability litigation.
  • Provide analytically sound opinions on case valuations taking into account the factual and legal issues in each case, and promptly updated and communicate valuation changes to the client and claims teams.
  • Applies principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Work productively and harmoniously with others on a consistent basis.
  • Respond positively to direction and feedback on performance.
  • Consistently maintain professional and appropriate demeanor.
  • Perform other duties/projects as assigned.

Qualifications
Education
  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and member in good standing of the State Bar of California required.

Work Experience
  • 6+ years Any combination of training/experience litigating insurance defense matters in either the in-house or external law firm setting typically gained by 6+ years progressively responsible experience may be considered as qualifying required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills as well as possessing strong quantitative, analytical, and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Pay, Benefits, and Other Information
    The expected salary range for this position is $138,079 - $172,599. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience, geographic location, and other job-related factors as permitted by law. Qualifications may warrant placement in a different job level.
