JOB SUMMARY

The Performance Improvement Coach is responsible for leading performance improvement projects and coaching leaders and team members at all levels throughout UVA Community Health on the Lean Management System, including delivery of formal and informal instruction in quality tools, data analysis, and statistical process control. Facilitate improvement projects utilizing a wide range of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) tools including those from Lean, Six Sigma, Change Management and Project Management. Works collaboratively with administrators, managers, and physicians to identify, coach, and support performance improvement projects that create ever increasing value for all key stakeholders. Project deliverables include improved performance in patient and team member safety, clinical quality, operational efficiency, patient and team member satisfaction, and financial outcomes. Responsible for delivering improvement support to a portfolio of health system customers that may include inpatient units, outpatient units, procedural departments, and ancillary support services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Performance Improvement / Project Management

  • Delivers project management services for select efforts as necessary

  • Uses effective chartering techniques to appropriately and efficiently scope projects and link them to the organization's overall strategic plan and key work processes.

  • Develop and update the ongoing management plan. Monitor and ensure that detailed project plans, reporting mechanisms, issue resolution processes, and communications are timely and meet quality and regulatory guidelines.

  • Provides effective leadership and coaching to ensure completion of performance improvement projects by selecting and utilizing appropriate CQI methodologies

  • Acts as a change agent, providing direction to leaders and team members and gaining their support

  • Demonstrate strong communication, analytical, and decision-making skills consistently to effectively lead teams and drive projects to completion. 

Training & Education

  • Develops curriculum and delivers instruction for both classroom and just-in-time learning experiences on a wide range of process improvement topics for multiple learner populations

Stakeholder Partnership, Facilitation & Consulting

  • Ability to generate change through influence rather than authority, using a proven framework to direct and accelerate organizational transformation. 

  • Serves as a liaison for hospital staff for quality related projects and programs.

  • Connects leaders and front-line staff to other organizational resources for purposes of enhancing improvement efforts

  • Partners with administrative and clinical leaders to establish and maintain the Lean Management System

  • Provide workgroups, committees, and task forces with exceptional facilitation, educational, and communication skills, both written and verbal.

Data, Analytics & Insights

  • Collects, analyzes and/or displays quantitative and qualitative data for purposes of identifying and understanding opportunities for improvement as appropriate

  • Analytical ability to identify and illustrate relationships among complex activities. 

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of process improvement tools and their applicability in a healthcare setting. 

Outcomes & Continuous Improvement

  • Acts to improve patient outcomes and experience of care, as well as improve utilization of resources.

  • Continually evaluates processes, tools, and workflows to identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Supports performance sustainability through identification and development of post implementation maintenance and monitoring 

Regulatory Compliance & Survey Readiness 

  • Support regulatory survey activity through participation in Survey Command Center activities

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: 

  • Bachelor's degree in healthcare-related field or Engineering required. 

  • Master's degree preferred

Experience: 

  • Minimum 5 years' experience required facilitating performance/process improvement projects in an acute care hospital setting by applying CQI tools and mentoring leaders and/or frontline staff. Minimum of 3 years if Master's prepared.

Licensure: 

  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt required. Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, Change Management, and/or Project Management strongly preferred

  • CPHQ preferred; required within 2 years of hire

  • RN preferred

Additional Skills/Requirements

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software, including: Word, Excel, PowerPoint: Visio

  • Strong organizational and time management skills; can independently manage multiple projects

  • Capable of applying critical thinking to clinical, operational, and financial challenges

  • Excellent oral/written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. 

  • Demonstrated ability to drive change, gain buy-in, and sustain improvements

    The base compensation range for this role is $44.53 - $63.61 hourly.  
    Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.  Please note that the pay range does not include any applicable incentive compensation programs such as shift differentials, clinical ladders, and other incentives that may be available for those in eligible positions.
