Job description

Ameritas is seeking an Intern to work in a shared capacity between our Infrastructure and Enterprise Security teams to work at the intersection of secure infrastructure operations and enterprise risk management. This intern role will work with efforts relating to modernization, monitoring, lifecycle management, vulnerability remediation, audit evidence, policy alignment, and risk reduction.
At Ameritas, our mission is Fulfilling Life. We do that in many ways, but especially by helping people invest in themselves by offering trusted financial products and advice. Because we believe everyone should be happy, healthy, and financially secure, we work hard to provide trusted financial products and valued guidance, including individual life and disability insurance, employee benefits, retirement planning, investments, and wealth management services.
This is a hybrid role working partially in-office (Lincoln, NE) and partially from home.
This internship will begin immediately (as soon as possible). This is not a summer internship, as we are seeking an intern for a year-round experience working 12 months (or more). Hours are flexible and part-time.
What You Do
  • Support analysis, documentation, coordination, reporting, evidence collection, monitoring validation, asset reconciliation, vulnerability tracking, and process improvement.
  • The role would not independently own production responsibilities, implement production changes, or make security risk decisions. These actions would be under the purview of a full-time team member.
  • The position would operate under a clearly defined work plan with named Infrastructure and Enterprise Security sponsors, weekly prioritization, role-based access, required confidentiality training, documented deliverables, and periodic check-ins.
  • Complete prioritized deliverables during the internship period across infrastructure documentation, monitoring validation, vulnerability follow-up, and control evidence.
  • Reconcile and validate inventory records for 100% of assigned infrastructure asset groups included in the internship work plan.
  • Improve vulnerability follow-up by tracking assigned remediation items weekly and reducing aged, unassigned, or unclear ownership items.
  • Produce or refresh operational runbooks, validation checklists, or knowledge articles that reduce reliance on informal knowledge transfer.
  • Support weekly Infrastructure and Enterprise Security prioritization reviews with documented status, blockers, and next steps.
  • Deliver a final executive readout summarizing completed work, measurable outcomes, risk reduction, lessons learned, and recommendations for future staffing or process improvements.

What You Bring
  • Must be enrolled in a Master's degree program at least half-time as defined by your institution studying computer engineering, cyber security, or a related field for the entire duration of the internship.
  • Interest in IT infrastructure and/or enterprise security is desired.
  • Available to work hours which will fall between 7:00am to 5:00pm (Central Time).
  • Able to commit to a 12-month (or longer) internship.

What we offer
  • Our company motto is "Fulfilling Life" and we take that job seriously, with a heavy commitment to volunteering and community support, employee well-being, and providing quality products and services that help our customers create a brighter future.
  • Being a mutual-based organization, the return on our investment goes back into the company, to benefit our members/customers.
  • We're committed to professional development, opportunity, inclusion, and diversity. Team building and collaboration are also priorities.

This internship is not eligible for benefits.
An Equal Opportunity Employer:
Ameritas has a reputation as a company that cares, and because everyone should feel safe bringing their authentic, whole self to work, we're committed to an inclusive culture and diverse workplace, enriched by our individual differences. We are an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer that hires based on qualifications, positive attitude, and exemplary work ethic, regardless of sex, race, color, national origin, religion, age, disability, veteran status, genetic information, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity or any other characteristic protected by law.
