Impact Intern information

What is an impact intern?

An Impact Intern is a student or recent graduate who participates in an internship focused on making a positive social, environmental, or community impact. These internships are usually offered by non-profits, social enterprises, or companies with strong corporate social responsibility programs. Impact Interns often work on projects related to sustainability, education, health, or community development, gaining hands-on experience while contributing to meaningful causes. The role allows interns to develop valuable skills and build a professional network in the impact sector.

What types of projects might an impact intern work on, and how are these projects typically structured within an organization?

As an Impact Intern, you may be involved in projects that address social, environmental, or community-focused initiatives, such as organizing sustainability campaigns, supporting nonprofit outreach, or analyzing data to measure program effectiveness. These projects are often collaborative and cross-functional, meaning you'll likely work closely with full-time staff, other interns, and sometimes external partners. Interns are usually given clear objectives and mentorship, but are also encouraged to bring fresh ideas and take initiative. This role offers a chance to make tangible contributions while gaining insight into the operations and strategies of mission-driven organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an impact intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Impact Intern, you generally need strong research, analytical, and project management skills, often supported by coursework in social sciences, business, or related fields. Familiarity with data analysis tools, survey platforms, and project management software like Excel, Qualtrics, or Trello is typically expected. Excellent communication, adaptability, and a passion for social impact help interns stand out in collaborative and mission-driven environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for effectively contributing to projects, measuring impact, and supporting organizational goals.
