Job description

Department Overview

Assistant staff scientist responsible for independently designing and performing experimental protocols that generate publication quality data and for managing experimental progress of other team members. The Assistant Staff Scientist will manage research projects, analyze experiments for publications and grant applications that involve characterizing mechanisms underlying APOE Christchurch protective effects against alpha-synuclein pathology. The position will require expertise in imaging techniques, such as confocal and multiphoton imaging, advanced mouse experience and standard molecular biology techniques. Additional responsibilities include training trainees and new staff on protocols and procedures. This position offers future opportunities for scientific collaboration, primary research and manuscript authorship.

Function/Duties of Position
  • Run research projects focused on the molecular mechanisms underlying the protective effects of APOE Christchurch on alpha-synuclein aggregation and to contribute to other projects within the laboratory. These projects will include the use of standard molecular biology and mouse techniques (including tissue culture, molecular biology, immunohistochemistry, animal surgeries including cranial window preparation and intracranial injections, in vivo imaging, protein purification and aggregation studies, and genetically modified mouse work).
  • Draft and edit figures and manuscripts
  • Assist in preparing grant applications
  • Teach and mentor other lab members
  • Attend and contribute to laboratory and departmental meetings
  • Keep abreast of the scientific literature relevant to the project
  • Present work at national and/or international conferences
Required Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree in relevant field and a minimum of 3 years of relevant post-doctoral work experience
  • Possesses a significant or high command of a professional sphere of knowledge
  • Performs research and shares leadership responsibilities consistent with goals of the research program
  • Contributes to science at a considerable level as determined by the discipline
  • Skilled with rodent handling, animal surgery, brain tissue preparation, immunohistochemical and biochemical analysis
  • Able to aid in grant application and publication development as appropriate
Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree in relevant field with a minimum of 4+ years of relevant post-doctoral work experience
  • Relevant skills in neurobiology

  • Advanced imaging techniques, standard molecular biology techniques, mouse behavior and surgeries

  • Prior experience working with Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease mouse models

  • Cranial window and stereotactic brain injections mouse surgeries

  • Strong publication record in the field of neurodegeneration research

  • Successful grant application record

Working Conditions:

  • Typical schedule: M-F, 8-hour workday in a research lab setting
  • Occasional nights and weekends, and international, national, local travel
  • Work schedule may vary depending on job/study requirements
  • Travel between meeting locations including using the Portland Aerial Tram
  • May have regular exposure to noise and interruptions
  • Busy work environment with strict deadlines, interruptions, multiple demands and people interactions.

Physical Demands & Equipment Usage:

  • Ability to carry and lift up to 50 pounds; continuous use of computer keyboards and various pieces of lab equipment.  Sitting or standing for more than six hours per day.
