What is an IIHS job?

IIHS jobs refer to employment positions at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing deaths, injuries, and property damage from motor vehicle crashes. IIHS offers a range of careers including research scientists, engineers, analysts, communications specialists, and administrative staff. Employees work on vehicle safety research, crash testing, public policy, and data analysis. Working at IIHS involves contributing to road safety improvements and influencing vehicle design and regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Insurance Investigator (IIHS), and why are they important?

To thrive as an Insurance Investigator, you need strong analytical abilities, attention to detail, and a background in criminal justice or insurance, often with a bachelor's degree. Familiarity with investigative software, databases, and sometimes certifications like CIFI (Certified Insurance Fraud Investigator) are typical requirements. Excellent interpersonal skills, critical thinking, and written communication help in interviewing claimants and preparing detailed reports. These skills ensure accurate fraud detection, effective investigations, and the protection of company assets.

What are some common challenges faced by researchers working at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)?

Researchers at IIHS often work with complex crash data and must stay up to date with evolving vehicle technologies and safety standards. Balancing rigorous scientific methodology with real-world applicability can be challenging, especially when collaborating with engineers, policymakers, and automakers. Additionally, translating technical research findings into clear recommendations for public safety can require strong communication and interdisciplinary teamwork skills.

What is the difference between Iihs vs Insurance Underwriter?

AspectIihsInsurance Underwriter
CredentialsTypically requires safety certifications, technical training, or industry-specific knowledgeRequires insurance licenses, certifications like CPCU or ARM often preferred
Work EnvironmentPrimarily in research, testing facilities, or safety analysis settingsOffice-based, assessing insurance applications and risk factors
Industry UsageUsed mainly in vehicle safety, automotive industry, and safety researchCommon in insurance companies, financial services, and risk assessment

While Iihs focuses on vehicle safety testing and research, insurance underwriters evaluate risks to determine insurance coverage and premiums. Both roles require industry-specific knowledge but differ in their primary functions and work environments.

What does the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety do?

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is a nonprofit organization that conducts vehicle safety research and crash testing to improve road safety. It provides safety ratings for vehicles, which are used by consumers and manufacturers to promote safer transportation choices.

CAE Full-Vehicle Crash Engineer

Detroit Engineered Products

Auburn Hills, MI โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Re-posted 3 days ago

Job description

Position Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled CAE Crash Analyst to lead full-vehicle finite element simulations for structural integrity and occupant safety. The ideal candidate will bridge the gap between virtual engineering and physical testing, driving the development of vehicles that meet or exceed global regulatory and consumer protection standards (FMVSS, ECE, IIHS, C-NCAP).
Key Responsibilities
  • Full Vehicle Simulation: Develop, execute, and analyze non-linear transient dynamic finite element models for frontal, side, rear, and rollover crash scenarios.
  • Model Build & Debug: Manage the assembly of full-vehicle FE models (including subsystems like suspension and powertrain) and troubleshoot issues related to contact, material properties, and hourglassing.
  • Optimization: Collaborate with design teams to perform sensitivity studies and DOE (Design of Experiments) to optimize structural load paths and mass efficiency.
  • Correlation: Compare simulation results (force-deflection, accelerations, intrusion) against physical sled and vehicle-level test data to improve model fidelity.
  • Reporting: Translate complex simulation outputs (energy absorption, intrusion, dummy injuries) into clear, actionable engineering recommendations.
  • Innovation: Investigate and implement new material models (composites, high-strength steels, aluminum) and validate their behavior under dynamic loading.

Required Qualifications
  • Education: B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Automotive Engineering (or related field).
  • Experience: 4+ years of experience specifically in full-vehicle crash analysis.
  • Technical Skills:
  • Software Proficiency: Expert-level command of LS-DYNA (Mandatory). Experience with ANSA or HyperMesh for pre-processing, and MetaPost or HyperView for post-processing.
  • Core Fundamentals: Strong grasp of FEA theory, plasticity, contact algorithms, and explicit time integration.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with FMVSS 208/214/216, ECE R94/R95, or IIHS protocols.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent problem-solving abilities, strong communication skills (technical writing and presentations), and the ability to collaborate effectively across global design teams.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with automated occupant positioning or safety system integration (airbags/seatbelts).
  • Knowledge of mesh-free methods or multi-domain simulation (CFD/FEA coupling).
  • Scripting proficiency (Python, Tcl/Tk, or MATLAB) to automate repetitive analysis tasks.
