Substitute teachers/teacher aides perform the following:
  • follow the lesson plan left by the teacher for whom he/she is substituting in accordance with district's philosophy, goals and objectives
  • meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated
  • establish and maintain order in the classroom
  • maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning
  • take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, materials, equipment and facilities
  • uphold and enforce school rules
  • cooperate with school personnel
  • establish and maintain cooperative relationships with other employees
  • report to the principal or his/her designee at the beginning and end of the school day
Please note that applicants holding a valid teaching certificate do not require a Substitute Certificate.

  • Pay administrative fee(s) for the criminal history background clearance
  • Print out the IdentoGO New Jersey Universal Fingerprint Form from the NJ Department of Education (NJDOE) Office of Student Protection webpage
  • Go to the Identogo Website to schedule an appointment and pay fingerprinting FEE.

  • Once you receive your criminal history report, you will need to upload this to your NJEdCert Portal
