An ICP Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining an Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) spectroscopy instrument used for analyzing the composition of chemical samples. They prepare samples, calibrate equipment, and ensure accurate measurements of metal and non-metal elements in a lab setting. Additionally, they follow strict safety and quality control procedures to maintain reliable data and instrument performance.
A typical day for an ICP Operator involves preparing samples, calibrating and operating the ICP instrument, running analytical tests to determine the concentration of various elements, and recording accurate data in laboratory software or LIMS. Operators are responsible for maintaining equipment, troubleshooting instrument issues, and ensuring quality assurance protocols are followed throughout the testing process. Collaboration with chemists, lab technicians, and quality control personnel is common to interpret results and ensure compliance with industry standards. Additionally, maintaining a clean and safe work environment is essential to the role.
To excel as an ICP Operator, you need a solid understanding of analytical chemistry, attention to detail, and experience operating Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) instruments, commonly supported by a relevant science degree. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), safety protocols, and specialized equipment calibration is essential, and certifications in laboratory safety may be beneficial. Strong organizational skills, reliability, and clear communication are highly valued in this position. These attributes ensure precise analytical results, lab safety, and effective collaboration within laboratory teams.
