What is an ice tech?

Ice Techs, short for Ice Technicians, are professionals responsible for maintaining and preparing ice surfaces, most commonly in ice rinks used for sports like hockey, figure skating, and curling. Their duties include resurfacing the ice, monitoring temperature and humidity, repairing any damage, and ensuring the ice meets specific safety and quality standards. Ice Techs also operate specialized equipment such as ice resurfacers (like Zambonis) and often assist with rink setup and breakdown for events. Attention to detail and knowledge of ice maintenance techniques are essential skills in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ice tech?

To thrive as an Ice Tech, you need a solid understanding of refrigeration systems, ice resurfacing techniques, and general maintenance skills, often supported by relevant technical training or certification. Familiarity with ice resurfacing machines (like Zambonis), basic plumbing tools, and facility management software is typically required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are critical soft skills in this role. These skills ensure the safe, reliable, and high-quality maintenance of ice surfaces, which is essential for smooth facility operations and user satisfaction.

What are some typical challenges faced by an ice tech during busy event schedules?

During peak event seasons, Ice Techs often encounter challenges such as maintaining optimal ice quality with quick turnaround times between games or performances. Heavy use can lead to surface wear, requiring efficient resurfacing and repairs under tight deadlines. Additionally, coordinating with event staff and athletes to minimize disruptions while ensuring safety standards adds complexity to the role. Strong communication and time management skills are essential to handle these demands effectively.

Job description

Overview
Job Purpose
We are seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Lead Quality Assurance Analyst to drive quality across Intercontinental Exchange's (ICE) trading technology platforms. This is a hands-on leadership role for a QA professional with a strong understanding of trading workflows, system functionality, data flows, and integrations.
In this role you will lead QA workstreams end to end-reviewing requirements, defining test strategy, coordinating testing activities, validating data with SQL, contributing to automated coverage, and mentoring team members through delivery. You will partner closely with QA leadership, developers, product owners, business analysts, project managers, and other stakeholders to ensure ICE trading applications are reliable, well-tested, and production-ready for internal and external customers.
It's a strong fit for someone who can balance hands-on testing, technical analysis, project leadership, and team development.
Responsibilities
  • Lead QA planning, coordination, and execution for assigned ICE trading system projects, releases, enhancements, and production support initiatives.
  • Define test strategy, scope, timelines, resource needs, dependencies, data requirements, risks, and release-readiness criteria.
  • Review business, functional, and technical requirements to identify gaps, clarify expected behavior, and ensure adequate coverage of trading workflows and system functionality.
  • Design, execute, and oversee functional, regression, integration, system, and user acceptance testing.
  • Create and maintain test cases that validate trading workflows, data inputs, calculations, APIs, messaging, downstream integrations, and expected outputs.
  • Write and execute SQL queries to validate data, support backend testing, investigate defects, and confirm database-level results.
  • Organize and maintain manual test cases, regression suites, test evidence, and traceability in Xray, Jira, or similar tools.
  • Identify automation candidates, contribute to automated coverage, and collaborate with automation resources.
  • Coordinate day-to-day testing across the QA team, keeping priorities, assignments, risks, blockers, and status clearly communicated.
  • Train and mentor QA team members through domain knowledge sharing, test-case reviews, and feedback that reinforces quality standards.
  • Identify, document, and track defects with clear reproduction steps, expected vs. actual results, evidence (screenshots, logs, SQL findings), impact, and severity.
  • Verify fixes, perform targeted regression testing, and provide input into release-readiness decisions.
  • Collaborate with developers, product owners, business analysts, project managers, support teams, and QA leadership throughout the SDLC and release process.

Knowledge and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business, Finance, or a related field or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7+ years of hands-on experience in software quality assurance or testing, including experience leading workstreams or projects.
  • Strong SQL skills, with the ability to write and execute queries for data validation, backend testing, troubleshooting, and defect investigation.
  • Experience testing trading systems, financial applications, workflow-based applications, or enterprise software.
  • Hands-on experience with Xray and Jira for test management, execution, defect tracking, reporting, and traceability.
  • Working knowledge of the SDLC and QA processes test strategy, planning, execution, regression testing, and defect management.
  • Proven ability to review requirements, define test scenarios and expected results, document acceptance criteria, and raise risks or gaps early.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills across front-end, backend, database, API, messaging, and integration layers.
  • Effective verbal and written communication, including clear documentation of defects, test evidence, risks, dependencies, and release status.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor QA team members and foster a collaborative, accountable, delivery-focused team.

Preferred Knowledge and Experience
  • Domain knowledge of ICE technology, trading systems, and trading workflows.
  • Automation experience with Playwright or comparable toolsets.
  • Experience coordinating project testing, assigning work, managing dependencies, tracking risks, and reporting status to stakeholders.
  • Comfort working with moving targets and shifting priorities in a fast-paced business environment.

What This Role Offers
The opportunity to lead QA for high-impact ICE trading technology, strengthening test coverage, improving QA processes, mentoring team members, and contributing to a collaborative, high-performing team.
