Job description

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS :
This is a skilled labor position involving responsibility for supervising and participating in the operation and maintenance of refrigeration equipment and a Zamboni or similar ice resurfacing machine at a municipal ice skating rink. General direction is received from administrative personnel. General supervision is exercised over assigned personnel. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES : (Illustrative only)
  • Operates and inspects refrigeration equipment, specifically, freon compressors and water pumps;
  • perates ice resurfacing machine;
  • Trains assistants in the operation of refrigeration equipment and ice resurfacing machine;
  • Monitors, records and adjusts salt levels and pressure in water being pumped through cooling system and reviews records of assistants to ensure the proper functioning of equipment;
  • Supervises and participates in the routine maintenance of freon compressors (e.g. change oil, fix leaks, replace dryers and strainers, etc.) and water pumps (e.g. repack water pumps, replace valves, etc.);
  • Supervises and participates in the routine maintenance of an ice resurfacing machine (e.g. tune engine, change blades, replace hydraulic seals, oil and filters, etc.);
  • Supervises and participates in the operation, cleaning and routine repair of an oil burning boiler;
  • Supervises and participates in routine carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical and other repair work involved in the general maintenance of a skating rink;
  • Supervises and participates in the ice preparation and removal at the beginning and end of ice skating season;
  • Schedules work hours and assigns duties to be performed by assistants;
  • Reports to Rink Manager on the progress of operations and repairs being made and requests outside assistance for major repairs as needed;
  • May perform various other functions involved in the operation of a skating rink such as cashier or night watchman.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS :
  • Thorough knowledge of the work practices, tools, terminology and accident precautions regarding the operation and routine repair of refrigeration equipment;
  • working knowledge of practices, tools, terminology and accident precautions of a variety of trades, including, carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical and boiler repairs;
  • ability to operate ice resurfacing machine; ability to plan and supervise the work of others;
  • ability to follow both verbal and written instructions; ability to keep simple records and make reports;
  • mechanical aptitude; mental alertness; initiative; resourcefulness; good judgment; thoroughness; tact; courtesy;
  • physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : EITHER
  1. Graduation from a trade or high school or possession of a High School Equivalency Diploma and five (5) years of refrigeration experience or heating plant equipment maintenance; or
  2. Seven (7) years of experience as described in (A); or
  3. An equivalent combination of education/training and experience as defined by the limits of

(A) and (B).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT :
Possession of a Class D Driver's License valid in the State of New York.
