Job description

GENERAL:
The employee will support the City of Rock Springs mission "To provide all individuals, through the combined efforts of city government and the people it serves, an effective, efficient and productive form of government, while promoting an enhanced quality of life, open communications and economic growth".
The employee will demonstrate the ability to manage time, maintain a safe and clean environment; practice confidentiality; treat all persons with respect and professional courtesy; accept change; accept and provide constructive feedback; and work as a team player. The employee must also demonstrate the competencies for their position and adhere to policies and procedures of their department and the City of Rock Springs.
JOB SUMMARY:
Under general direction, the employee will be responsible for assisting in the administration of various recreational and sports activities in the Family Recreation Center Ice Arena. Seasonal Ice Staff will be able to prepare/operate all the resources necessary for the operation of the ice arena by: operating point of sale software for retail items and concessions; maintaining the cleanliness of rental skates; performing janitorial duties to insure cleanliness and orderliness; designing and executing lesson plans for ice skating lessons, and enforcing safety guidelines and safe practices for all patrons.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The employee will perform a wide variety of duties including, but not limited to, the following:
  1. Ensuring that facilities are clean and safe for users by performing routine cleaning or maintenance on equipment and the ice facility.
  2. Providing first aid to injured persons until someone more trained or emergency medical personnel arrive.
  3. Supervising youth, adult & senior activities on the ice to ensure safety, provide guidance, and ensure ice arena rules are followed.
  4. Dressing appropriately for their work environment according to facility policies or best practices for the industry.
  5. Supervising activities such as skate lessons, hockey practice, figure skating practice, and various tournaments.
  6. Ensuring compliance with safety specifications such as checking rental skates for defects before allowing patrons to use them.

ABILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS:
The employee has the necessary knowledge, skill, training and ability to:
  1. Skate or have the physical capability to learn how to skate.
  2. Effectively supervise a wide range of recreation activities that take place in the ice arena.
  3. Conduct work in a safe manner in accordance with established City of Rock Springs employee policy.
  4. Be familiar with all types of sports pertaining to ice or a willingness to learn; be familiar with first aid; comprehend, remember and follow detailed oral directions; understand and carry out written directions; read, write, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential functions of the position.
  5. Interest in recreation work related to the ice arena, demonstrate reliability and punctuality, and display physical condition commensurate with the duties of Seasonal Ice Staff I.
  6. Communicate clearly concisely, and courteously, orally and in writing.
  7. Establish, cultivate, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with work staff and patrons while maintaining patience, tact, and resourcefulness.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Experience: Entry Level
License or Certificate:
Possession of or the ability to obtain American Red Cross First Aid and CPR Certifications
Driver's License or the ability to transport oneself to and from work.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:
Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, lift 50 lbs.; withstand exposure to heat, noise, and other attendant environmental indoor and outdoor conditions; knowledge of related hazardous materials, potentially dangerous chemicals, and blood borne pathogens.
