What is an ICC Bolting Inspector?

An ICC Bolting Inspector is a certified professional responsible for inspecting and verifying the installation of high-strength bolts in steel construction according to building codes and standards. They ensure that bolted connections in structural steel assemblies are installed correctly, torqued to specification, and comply with safety regulations. This role is critical for ensuring structural integrity in buildings and bridges. To become an ICC Bolting Inspector, individuals must pass the International Code Council's (ICC) Steel Bolting Special Inspector certification exam and often have prior experience in construction or inspection.

What are some common challenges faced by an ICC Bolting Inspector on construction sites?

ICC Bolting Inspectors often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple trades to schedule inspections, ensuring all bolting procedures meet strict code requirements, and documenting inconsistencies for project records. Working in active construction environments can require flexibility and strong communication skills to collaborate with engineers, contractors, and project managers.
