How much do hydrodynamics engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 6, 2026, the average yearly pay for hydrodynamics engineer in the United States is $95,796.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $81,000.00 and $116,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are typical projects or tasks that a Hydrodynamics Engineer works on?

Hydrodynamics Engineers often work on projects involving the analysis and design of fluid flows for applications such as ship hulls, offshore structures, pipelines, or water turbines. Day-to-day tasks may include running simulations using CFD software, conducting model tests in labs or towing tanks, and collaborating closely with naval architects or structural engineers. The role frequently requires both independent analysis and teamwork, offering a mix of desk-based modeling and hands-on experimental work. Depending on your employer, you may also participate in site visits or prototype testing, contributing to the optimization of real-world engineering solutions.

What does a Hydrodynamics Engineer do?

A Hydrodynamics Engineer analyzes and designs systems involving fluid motion, such as ship hulls, submarines, offshore structures, and propulsion systems. They use computational models, simulations, and experimental testing to optimize performance, efficiency, and stability in water environments. These engineers often work in industries like naval architecture, marine engineering, oil and gas, and renewable energy. Their expertise helps improve vessel maneuverability, reduce drag, and enhance overall hydrodynamic performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Hydrodynamics Engineer position, and why are they important?

Hydrodynamics Engineers typically require a solid background in fluid mechanics, computational modeling, and engineering principles, often supported by a degree in mechanical, marine, or civil engineering. Familiarity with tools like CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software, CAD programs, and experience with laboratory or field testing are commonly expected, and certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to work collaboratively are valuable soft skills for this role. Mastery of these abilities is crucial to designing efficient fluid systems, tackling complex hydrodynamic challenges, and contributing meaningfully to multidisciplinary engineering teams.
