Hydraulic Valve Design Engineer information

What does a hydraulic valve design engineer do?

A Hydraulic Valve Design Engineer specializes in designing, developing, and testing hydraulic valves used in machinery and equipment. They create detailed technical drawings, select appropriate materials, and ensure that valves meet performance, safety, and industry standards. These engineers often collaborate with manufacturing teams to optimize production processes and may also troubleshoot issues with prototypes or existing products. Their work is critical in industries such as automotive, aerospace, industrial machinery, and energy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a hydraulic valve design engineer?

To thrive as a Hydraulic Valve Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering, fluid dynamics, and CAD design, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation software like ANSYS or SolidWorks, and experience with industry standards and certifications such as ISO 4413, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help engineers innovate and collaborate across teams. These competencies are crucial for developing reliable, efficient hydraulic valves that meet performance, safety, and regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges faced by hydraulic valve design engineers when working on new product development?

Hydraulic Valve Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing performance requirements with manufacturing constraints, ensuring reliability under varying pressure and temperature conditions, and meeting strict industry standards. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—including manufacturing, testing, and quality assurance—is key to troubleshooting design issues and implementing improvements. Staying updated on the latest materials and simulation tools can also be essential for overcoming technical hurdles and delivering innovative solutions.

What is the difference between Hydraulic Valve Design Engineer vs Hydraulic Systems Engineer?

AspectHydraulic Valve Design EngineerHydraulic Systems Engineer
Primary FocusDesign and development of hydraulic valvesDesign and integration of entire hydraulic systems
Required SkillsFluid dynamics, valve mechanics, CAD designHydraulic principles, system integration, control systems
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, R&D labs, engineering firmsIndustrial plants, machinery design, engineering consulting
CertificationsMechanical or hydraulic engineering degrees, possibly PEMechanical/hydraulic engineering degrees, system certification

While both roles involve hydraulic systems, the Hydraulic Valve Design Engineer specializes in creating and refining hydraulic valves, whereas the Hydraulic Systems Engineer focuses on designing entire hydraulic systems, including valves, pumps, and controls. The former emphasizes component-level expertise, while the latter takes a broader system approach.

Mechanical Engineer

Hyperion Solutions

Richmond, IN • On-site

Full-time

Re-posted 26 days ago

Job description

Hyperion Solutions is currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer for our Elevator Equipment location, in Richmond IN. This position will be a key contributor to our manufacturing process by playing a vital role in designing and developing cutting-edge mechanical solutions that drive our company’s success.

The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical design capability with direct experience in hydraulic systems, fluid power, or mechanical power systems. Elevator industry experience, especially with hydraulic elevator systems, would be a major differentiator.

This role will be expected to become EECO’s go-to technical resource for jack and power unit application support, application calculations, product troubleshooting, and quality-related technical issues. A major focus of the role will be hydraulic valve design, including the ability to independently design new hydraulic valves or significantly improve existing designs. This is a product development engineering role, not a production/process/materials engineering role.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a highlevel mechanical engineering resource for EECO hydraulic elevator products, especially jacks, power units, and hydraulic valves.
  • Develop into the site subject matter expert for jack and power unit application support, including application calculations and technical troubleshooting.
  • Independently design new hydraulic valve concepts and/or significantly improve existing hydraulic valve designs.
  • Support product innovation related to hydraulic elevator systems, fluid control, valve performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Support quality investigations and corrective actions related to hydraulic components, applications, and field or manufacturing issues.
  • Write, execute, and document engineering test plans for hydraulic components and systems.
  • Use simulation and analysis tools to support design decisions, product validation, and pressurecontaining component evaluation.
  • Support manufacturing as needed, especially in the areas of testing, welding/fabrication, machining basics, and assembly troubleshooting.
  • Improve product design documentation, including drawings, specifications, calculations, BOMs, and engineering records.
  • Apply designformanufacturability principles to new and existing product designs.
  • Read and interpret regulatory, code, customer, or internal requirement documents and translate those requirements into engineering designs and documentation.
  • Work within common engineering processes such as ECOs, revision control, design reviews, validation testing, and controlled release of engineering documentation.
  • Mentor and train lowerlevel engineers and drafters where appropriate.
  • Act as a technical lead for Richmond engineering activities until a formal local engineering management structure is established.
  • Required Experience and Skills
  • Mechanical engineering product development experience.
  • Strong mechanical design capability with experience in fluid power, hydraulic systems, mechanical power systems, or similar products.
  • Ability to independently design or substantially improve hydraulic components, especially valves.
  • Experience using 3D CAD. SolidWorks is preferred, but experience with other major 3D CAD platforms is acceptable.
  • Simulation experience required; specific tool is less important than demonstrated ability to use analysis to guide engineering decisions.
  • Ability to write and execute engineering test plans.
  • Strong designformanufacturability mindset.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and implement technical requirements from codes, standards, specifications, or customer requirements.
  • Working knowledge of engineering change control, revision control, and structured engineering release processes.
  • Ability to support manufacturing and quality issues in a handson production environment.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with engineering, manufacturing, quality, purchasing, and leadership teams.
  • Job Requirements
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field required
  • 710 years of proven experience in mechanical design within the elevator industry preferred.
  • Proven leadership experience, with a track record of successfully managing and developing engineering teams
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and other relevant engineering tools.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, materials, and manufacturing processes.
  • Familiarity with simulation and analysis tools for stress, thermal, and tolerance analysis.
  • Excellent problemsolving skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal abilities for team collaboration and client interaction.
  • Experience with project management, from concept to completion, is a plus.
  • Preferred / Differentiating Experience
  • Elevator industry experience, especially hydraulic elevator systems.
  • Hydraulic jack, cylinder, power unit, or valve design experience.
  • Experience with pressurecontaining components or pressurevesseltype analysis.
  • Experience with tolerance analysis.
  • Experience with hydraulic testing, performance validation, and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with ASME A17.1 or other elevatorrelated codes and standards.
  • Professional Engineer license. A PE license would be a major plus and may justify a higher salary range.
  • Prior experience acting as a technical lead, mentor, or informal engineering leader.
  • Benefits
