What is an HVAC Side?

An HVAC side job refers to part-time or freelance work in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning outside of a primary job. Technicians often take on side jobs to earn extra income by performing repairs, installations, or maintenance for residential or small commercial clients. These jobs require the necessary skills, certifications, and tools to ensure proper and safe work. Many professionals do side jobs to gain experience, build a client base, or eventually start their own business. However, it's essential to check company policies or local regulations regarding side work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the HVAC Side position?

To thrive as an HVAC Installer or HVAC Technician on the side, you need a solid understanding of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, along with the ability to troubleshoot and repair various equipment. Familiarity with tools like manifold gauges, refrigerant recovery systems, and EPA certifications for handling refrigerants is often required. Strong customer service skills, punctuality, and attention to detail help you stand out in this field. These abilities ensure that you can perform installations or repairs efficiently, maintain client satisfaction, and ensure safety and compliance with industry standards.

What are the typical work hours and flexibility like for HVAC Side jobs?

HVAC Side jobs often offer flexible scheduling, allowing technicians to take on projects outside of regular business hours, including evenings and weekends. This flexibility makes it an ideal role for those looking to supplement their income or gain experience around existing commitments. However, work may be more sporadic and project-based compared to full-time HVAC positions. Team sizes are usually smaller, with many assignments carried out independently or with just one other technician, requiring strong self-management and communication skills. If you enjoy variety in your work schedule and the ability to manage your own time, HVAC side roles can be a great fit.

Is HVAC a good side hustle?

HVAC work can be a viable side hustle for those with technical skills, as it often involves flexible scheduling and the potential for additional income through repairs and installations. However, it typically requires certifications, safety training, and familiarity with tools and systems, which may limit its accessibility as a part-time activity.

What field of HVAC pays the most?

In HVAC, specialized roles such as HVAC project managers, system designers, and technicians with advanced certifications tend to earn the highest salaries. Commercial and industrial HVAC positions often pay more than residential roles due to complexity and scale, especially for those with extensive experience and technical skills.

Re-posted 4 days ago

Job description

Jake’s Heating, Air & Plumbing is hiring an HVAC Service Turnover Technician. We’re looking for someone with solid residential HVAC experience who can diagnose systems, communicate well with homeowners, and recognize when a system is ready for replacement instead of another repair.

This position is a mix of technical HVAC work and customer communication. You need to know your way around a system, but you also need to be comfortable talking with homeowners and turning over qualified replacement opportunities to our Comfort Advisors.

What You’ll Do

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot residential HVAC systems
  • Perform service, repairs, maintenance, and system testing
  • Identify systems that may be better suited for replacement than repair
  • Turn qualified replacement opportunities over to our Comfort Advisors
  • Explain findings and options clearly to homeowners
  • Take accurate system readings and document each call
  • Keep customers informed throughout the service call
  • Work closely with our service and sales teams
  • Maintain a clean and professional appearance
  • Follow company safety procedures

What We’re Looking For

  • Residential HVAC service experience
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills
  • Knowledge of furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, refrigerant, and electrical components
  • Comfortable talking with homeowners
  • Able to recognize repair versus replacement opportunities
  • Goal driven and motivated by results
  • Organized and able to keep accurate documentation
  • Reliable with a good driving record
  • Team player with a good attitude

What We Offer

  • Competitive pay
  • Performance based earning opportunities
  • Ongoing training
  • Opportunities to grow within the company
  • Supportive team environment
  • Established company serving the community since 2006

We’re looking for someone who knows HVAC, knows how to talk to customers, and understands when it makes sense to bring in a Comfort Advisor. If that sounds like you, we’d like to talk.

munity since 2006
