Commercial HVAC Mechanic

Position Summary

The Commercial HVAC Installation Mechanic is responsible for installing, replacing, starting up, and commissioning commercial HVAC, refrigeration, and ductwork systems. This role requires experience with complex commercial equipment, including VRF/VRV systems, chillers, refrigeration equipment, rooftop units, split systems, heat pumps, air-handling equipment, and associated sheet-metal ductwork.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install commercial HVAC and refrigeration equipment according to project plans, specifications, manufacturer requirements, and applicable codes.
  • Install and replace VRF/VRV systems, chillers, rooftop units, split systems, heat pumps, air handlers, condensing units, and related equipment.
  • Lay out, assemble, install, and modify sheet-metal ductwork, including supply, return, and exhaust-air systems.
  • Install duct fittings, dampers, louvers, diffusers, grilles, insulation, hangers, supports, and equipment connections.
  • Measure, cut, fabricate, seal, and secure ductwork according to plans and industry standards.
  • Install refrigerant piping, hydronic piping, condensate lines, valves, supports, and equipment accessories.
  • Perform brazing, pressure testing, evacuation, refrigerant charging, leak detection, and system startup.
  • Assist with equipment commissioning, airflow testing, balancing, controls integration, and troubleshooting.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, duct layouts, wiring diagrams, specifications, and equipment submittals.
  • Diagnose and resolve installation, refrigeration, airflow, electrical, mechanical, and ductwork-related issues.
  • Coordinate work with project managers, foremen, other trades, subcontractors, and customers.
  • Maintain accurate startup reports, equipment records, material usage, and daily work documentation.
  • Follow OSHA requirements, company safety procedures, and refrigerant-handling regulations.

Qualifications

  • Three or more years of commercial HVAC installation experience preferred.
  • Experience installing commercial ductwork and sheet-metal systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with commercial refrigeration, VRF/VRV systems, chillers, and other commercial HVAC equipment.
  • Knowledge of duct layout, fabrication, sealing, hanging, insulation, and equipment transitions.
  • Strong knowledge of refrigerant piping, brazing, evacuation, charging, leak testing, and startup procedures.
  • Ability to read mechanical plans, ductwork drawings, specifications, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer documentation.
  • Working knowledge of electrical components, HVAC controls, airflow, ventilation, and hydronic systems.
  • EPA Section 608 Universal Certification or Commerial Certification.
  • Manufacturer certifications for VRF/VRV or chiller equipment are highly desirable.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work from lifts, scaffolding, rooftops, and elevated areas.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, reach, and work in mechanical rooms and confined spaces.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
