REPORTS TO:ย ย ย  ย ย  Director of Facility Operations and theFacility Operations Manager

SUPERVISES:ย ย  ย ย ย ย  HVAC Technicians and assigned maintenance personnel.

JOB SUMMARY:ย  ย  The Lead HVAC Technician is responsible for overseeing, coordinating, and performing maintenance, repair, and installation of all district heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. This position supports the efficient and safe operation of all HVAC systems to maintain a comfortable and healthy environment for students, staff, and visitors across the district.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs functions which will develop, implement and supervise the HVAC maintenance program:
    • Work order directives
    • Preventative maintenance program
    • District support measures
    • Training of HVAC personnel.
  • Plans, assigns, and supervises HVAC maintenance and repair work for assigned personnel.
  • Performs advanced troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of HVAC systems, including boilers, chillers, air handlers, pumps, VAV systems, and related controls.
  • Monitors HVAC system performance and energy management systems (EMS/BAS) to optimize efficiency and comfort.
  • Coordinates with contractors and vendors for major repairs, upgrades, or installations.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable safety codes, environmental regulations, and district standards.
  • Orders and maintains inventory of HVAC supplies, parts, and materials.
  • Provides technical training, guidance, and mentorship to HVAC technicians and assigned maintenance personnel.
  • Maintains accurate records of service calls, repairs, and preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Collaborate with the Facility Operations Manager to prioritize and schedule HVAC-related work orders.
  • Responsible for the care of costly equipment that needs constant attention to prevent undue wear and tear, depreciation and expensive repairs.
  • Responsible in part for the safety of students and district employees in the area where work is being performed. Also responsible for reporting and removing hazards and dangerous conditions that might result in accidents or fires.
  • Responsible for affecting economies in operation by preventing the needless waste or careless use of maintenance supplies, equipment, water, electricity and fuel.
  • Responsible for the maintenance on the equipment used in course of completing tasks and assigned duties.
  • Responsible for cleaning up any debris created by the particular job being performed; responsible for replacing displaced materials or equipment.
  • Responsible for responding to all emergencies after hours both during the week and on weekends.ย  These emergencies may include, but are not limited to maintenance, security or fire alarm problems, and snow plowing.
  • Responsible for all HVAC systems and corresponding components being properly and adequately cared for.
  • When necessary, other specific duties may be assigned that are in line with this job classification.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education and Experience:
    • High School Diploma or equivalent
    • Pass a written Non-Residential HVAC test.
    • Prior Experience working in PreK-12 schools. (Preferred)
    • Minimum of 5 years of commercial or institutional HVAC experience, including 2 years in a lead or supervisory role. (Preferred)
  • Licenses/Certifications:
    • Valid Driver's License.
    • Technical school certification or associate degree in HVAC (Preferred)
    • Valid EPA Universal Refrigerant Recovery Certification. (Preferred)
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Comprehensive knowledge of commercial HVAC systems, including air conditioning, heating, ventilation, and control systems.
    • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
    • Familiarity with building automation systems (BAS) and energy management controls.
    • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
    • Excellent communication and teamwork skills when coordinating with district staff, contractors, and administrators.
    • Proficient in the safe operation of HVAC tools, meters, and related equipment.
    • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects.
    • Maintain a positive attitude.
    • Working knowledge of plumbing and electrical systems as they relate to HVAC.
    • Ability to work cooperatively and communicate well with others, take direction from appropriate supervisors and share knowledge with peers
    • Must serve as a role model for all students and perform their duties to create an environment that is conducive to providing students with an enhanced and engaged learning opportunity.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Must pass a district-required physical examination, provide a clear back X-ray, and negative tuberculosis (TB) test prior to employment.ย 

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.ย  Work is performed inside and outside; with the outside environment including exposure to inclement weather, heat and humidity.ย  You must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds consistently with heavier weight necessary at times.ย  Must frequently stand for long periods, and sometimes work in uncomfortable or cramped positions, need physical strength and stamina.ย  Ability to climb in overhead structures (no fear of heights), to work beneath machines and in close quarters performing analysis and repair work.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:ย  Salary is in accordance with the Supportive Staff salary schedule. The work year for this position is 251 days.ย  The normal work schedule is eight-hour shifts, with availability to work flexible hours and/or overtime when necessary. Work week may be early hours, and duties could involve occasional night work due to mechanical failure, vandalism, snow removal or related school activities.ย
