What is an HVAC apprentice?

HVAC apprentices are entry-level workers who are learning the skills necessary to install, maintain, and repair heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. They work under the supervision of experienced HVAC technicians or journeymen, gaining hands-on experience while also studying technical knowledge, often through a formal apprenticeship program. This role is essential for developing the foundational skills and certifications needed to become a licensed HVAC technician.

What does an HVAC apprentice do?

As an HVAC apprentice, your job is to learn about heating, ventilation, and air conditioning units. This typically takes the form of working part-time while attending training at a local accredited program for the HVAC trade, but some companies provide all training internally if their systems are unique enough. In some locations, the apprenticeship is split into different levels based on your existing skills. This job involves learning how HVAC systems are installed and repaired in each type of building, which mechanical skills are necessary to install, repair, and remove these temperature systems, and how to identify operational concerns like facility damage or faulty alarms. HVAC apprentices often manage and operate equipment and work under the supervision of a journeyman or senior-level employee.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HVAC apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as an HVAC Apprentice, you need a basic understanding of mechanical systems, strong math skills, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with hand tools, power tools, and HVAC-specific instruments, as well as OSHA safety certifications, is typically required. Dependability, eagerness to learn, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for success in this role. These skills ensure apprentices can safely assist in installations and repairs while building the technical expertise and professionalism needed for career advancement.

What types of hands-on experience can I expect as an HVAC apprentice, and how does this support my development in the trade?

As an HVAC Apprentice, you'll gain extensive hands-on experience by assisting with installations, maintenance, and repairs of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems under the supervision of licensed technicians. You'll regularly work with a variety of tools, learn to diagnose system issues, and help with tasks such as ductwork, wiring, and equipment calibration. This practical exposure not only builds your technical skills but also helps you understand safety standards and industry best practices. The diverse tasks and real-world problem-solving you'll encounter are essential for progressing toward journeyman status and future independent work.

Job description

Cornels Plumbing, Heating & Air is looking for an experienced HVAC Service Manager to lead and develop our residential service team in the Portland market.

We are one of the fastest-growing home-service companies on the West Coast, but weโ€™re equally focused on building a company where talented people enjoy coming to work. Our culture is competitive, team-oriented, and built around developing peopleโ€”not simply managing numbers.

Our team receives memberships to LifeTime Fitness, participates in catered monthly company meetings often with team games and competitions, and works in an environment where accomplishments are recognized and celebrated. We take performance seriously without taking ourselves too seriously.

What Youโ€™ll Be Responsible For:

  • Leading, coaching, and developing our residential HVAC service technicians
  • Conducting weekly training, ride-alongs, call reviews, and individual coaching
  • Building a positive culture based on accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement
  • Monitoring revenue, close rate, average ticket, callbacks, memberships, reviews, and lead conversion
  • Ensuring every customer receives a thorough evaluation and clearly explained options
  • Maintaining our fix-it-first mentality while identifying legitimate replacement opportunities
  • Partnering with dispatch, sales, installation, and customer service to create a seamless customer experience
  • Recruiting, onboarding, and retaining high-performing technicians
  • Resolving escalated customer concerns professionally
  • Maintaining safety, documentation, licensing, and quality-control standards

What We Offer:

  • Competitive base salary with performance-based earning potential
  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits
  • Paid time off
  • Company vehicle and phone
  • Life Time Fitness membership
  • Catered monthly company meetings with team games and competitions
  • Ongoing leadership and technical development
  • Recognition for individual and team accomplishments
  • The opportunity to lead within one of the fastest-growing home-service companies on the West Coast
  • A company that invests heavily in its people, culture, and long-term growth

This is a strong opportunity for someone who wants more than a management title. Weโ€™re looking for a leader who wants to build people, strengthen a department, and play an important role in where Cornels goes next.

Job Type: Full-time
ย Location: Portland, Oregon
ย Compensation: $95,000 - $155,000 Salary + Bonus Potential
ย Schedule: Monday - Friday

What Weโ€™re Looking For:

  • Residential HVAC service leadership experience
  • Strong technical knowledge of heating, cooling, heat pumps, airflow, and system diagnostics
  • A proven ability to coach technicians and improve measurable performance
  • A leader who can hold people accountable while earning their trust
  • Strong communication, organization, and conflict-resolution skills
  • Comfort managing through KPIs and performance scorecards
  • A team-first attitude with consistent follow-through
  • A valid driverโ€™s license and clean driving record
