What is an HVAC apprentice?

HVAC apprentices are entry-level workers who are learning the skills necessary to install, maintain, and repair heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. They work under the supervision of experienced HVAC technicians or journeymen, gaining hands-on experience while also studying technical knowledge, often through a formal apprenticeship program. This role is essential for developing the foundational skills and certifications needed to become a licensed HVAC technician.

What does an HVAC apprentice do?

As an HVAC apprentice, your job is to learn about heating, ventilation, and air conditioning units. This typically takes the form of working part-time while attending training at a local accredited program for the HVAC trade, but some companies provide all training internally if their systems are unique enough. In some locations, the apprenticeship is split into different levels based on your existing skills. This job involves learning how HVAC systems are installed and repaired in each type of building, which mechanical skills are necessary to install, repair, and remove these temperature systems, and how to identify operational concerns like facility damage or faulty alarms. HVAC apprentices often manage and operate equipment and work under the supervision of a journeyman or senior-level employee.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HVAC apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as an HVAC Apprentice, you need a basic understanding of mechanical systems, strong math skills, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with hand tools, power tools, and HVAC-specific instruments, as well as OSHA safety certifications, is typically required. Dependability, eagerness to learn, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for success in this role. These skills ensure apprentices can safely assist in installations and repairs while building the technical expertise and professionalism needed for career advancement.

What types of hands-on experience can I expect as an HVAC apprentice, and how does this support my development in the trade?

As an HVAC Apprentice, you'll gain extensive hands-on experience by assisting with installations, maintenance, and repairs of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems under the supervision of licensed technicians. You'll regularly work with a variety of tools, learn to diagnose system issues, and help with tasks such as ductwork, wiring, and equipment calibration. This practical exposure not only builds your technical skills but also helps you understand safety standards and industry best practices. The diverse tasks and real-world problem-solving you'll encounter are essential for progressing toward journeyman status and future independent work.

Job description

Lead HVAC Installer
Astar Heating & Air Conditioning | Middletown, NY
Lead the Work. Set the Standard. Build What Comes Next.
Experienced HVAC installers know the difference between simply getting equipment in place and delivering an installation that performs the way it should. The right company gives you the time, support, materials, and team needed to do the job correctly.
At Astar Heating & Air Conditioning, we've served homeowners throughout the Mid-Hudson Valley for decades by combining dependable home comfort solutions with professional, customer-focused service. We're looking for an experienced Lead HVAC Installer who takes ownership of their work, leads by example, and wants to be part of a company that recognizes the value of skilled tradespeople.
You'll lead residential replacement and installation projects from start to finish, guide apprentices and helpers, and work closely with our sales, warehouse, service, and operations teams. You'll have the opportunity to make decisions in the field, develop less-experienced installers, and deliver work you're proud to put your name on.
If you're looking for steady work, strong operational support, and a leadership role where quality matters, Astar may be the right place for your next move.
What You'll Do
  • Lead residential HVAC replacement and installation projects from start to finish.
  • Install furnaces, boilers, air conditioners, heat pumps, air handlers, mini-splits, thermostats, and indoor air quality equipment.
  • Complete ductwork modifications, refrigerant piping, drainage, venting, gas piping, wiring, and system connections.
  • Direct and train apprentices and installation helpers while maintaining a safe, professional jobsite.
  • Perform equipment startups, charging, airflow verification, testing, and commissioning.
  • Troubleshoot installation issues and ensure work meets applicable codes, manufacturer requirements, and company standards.
  • Maintain accurate job documentation and promptly communicate equipment, material, or scope concerns.
  • Protect customers' homes and explain system operation, maintenance, and warranty information.
  • Coordinate with sales, service, warehouse, dispatch, and leadership to keep projects moving efficiently.
  • Maintain assigned vehicles, tools, equipment, and inventory.
What We're Looking For
  • Previous experience leading residential HVAC replacement and installation projects.
  • Ability to complete residential HVAC installations independently from start to finish.
  • Strong knowledge of furnaces, boilers, air conditioners, heat pumps, ductwork, refrigeration, airflow, venting, and system commissioning.
  • Strong troubleshooting, leadership, and jobsite problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to train, coach, and direct apprentices or installation helpers.
  • Commitment to quality workmanship, safety, and code compliance.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • EPA Universal Certification required.
  • Applicable New York trade licenses or certifications preferred.
  • Comfortable using tablets, mobile applications, and field service software.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to perform physical work in attics, basements, crawl spaces, and outdoor conditions.
Why Work at Astar?
  • Competitive compensation based on experience
  • Performance-based earning opportunities
  • Steady, year-round customer demand
  • Strong operational, warehouse, and office support
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance
  • 401(k) with Company Match
  • Paid Time Off and Paid Holidays
  • Company-Provided Vehicle
  • Company Phone or Tablet
  • Uniforms Provided
  • Ongoing Paid Technical and Leadership Training
  • Career Advancement Opportunities
  • The opportunity to train and develop future HVAC professionals
  • A professional environment that values quality, accountability, and teamwork
What Success Looks Like
Success in this role means taking ownership of each installation, delivering clean and dependable workmanship, and ensuring every system operates correctly before the job is complete. You'll set the standard for the installation team, develop less-experienced employees, and help Astar continue earning the trust of homeowners throughout the Hudson Valley.
