Apprentices typically join a union, such as the UA (United Association) or Sheet Metal Workers, which provides structured training through classroom instruction and on-the-job experience. This apprenticeship usually lasts 3-5 years and includes coursework on HVAC systems, refrigeration, electrical components, and safety regulations. Upon completion, apprentices can become journeymen, gaining higher wages and more job opportunities. Union apprenticeships also offer benefits like healthcare and retirement plans.

With experience and ongoing education, some professionals move into supervisory roles, specialized technical positions, or even pursue training to become instructors.
