Job description

Program Director, Food Rescue - Bronx, NY
Location: Bronx, NY • Based at Hunts Point Terminal Market (hybrid)
Type: Full-time
Salary: $90,000-$110,000, commensurate with experience • Full benefits package
Reports to: Wholesale Rescue Operations Director
You'll lead daily operations at Hunts Point Terminal Market, build the partnerships that keep food moving, and shape the strategy that helps the program grow. It's a role for someone who likes to think a few moves ahead and still gets on the floor to load a truck when it counts.
About Sharing Excess
Sharing Excess is one of the fastest-growing food rescue organizations in America, built on a simple mission: save food and feed communities. What began as a student movement now runs nationwide, moving nearly 2 million pounds of food every week (100+ million pounds a year) to thousands of community partners.
The work is fast and deeply human. We operate with the pace of a high-growth startup and the heart of a grassroots movement, from building our own technology to rethinking how the food supply chain reaches people who need it. If you want a job where your daily effort visibly improves lives, this is one of the best places to do it.
What you'll do:
Lead operations at the Market
  • Own day-to-day operations at Hunts Point Terminal Market, keeping logistics efficient, food handling high-quality, and service reliable.
  • Manage scheduling, workflow, food quality control, and inventory.
  • Keep the program compliant with food safety and operational standards.
  • Jump into hands-on work when needed: sorting, loading, coordinating logistics, and operating warehouse equipment like forklifts and pallet jacks.

Grow the program
  • Develop and execute plans to strengthen and expand the Bronx program.
  • Track goals, spot operational gaps, and put fixes in place.
  • Help shape and scale new initiatives that expand our reach.

Build and lead the team
  • Supervise and support program staff with coaching, feedback, and clear performance guidance.
  • Partner with the Operations Manager to train the team on procedures, food safety, and best practices.
  • Foster a positive, mission-aligned team culture.

Deepen partnerships and support fundraising
  • Build and maintain relationships with market vendors, receiving-agency partners, donors, and community organizations.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for key stakeholders, with consistent, responsive communication.
  • Represent Sharing Excess at community events, coalition meetings, and partner engagements.
  • Identify and cultivate new partnerships that expand capacity, donor base, and community impact.
  • Work with the Development team on grant writing, donor stewardship, and funder reporting tied to the Bronx program.

You'll also partner closely with our CPO, COO, CEO/Founder, HR, and the Operations, Logistics & Distribution teams. This list isn't exhaustive; additional responsibilities may come up as the organization grows.
What you'll bring:
  • 5+ years in program management, operations, food distribution, or a related field. Nonprofit or food-sector experience is a strong plus.
  • A track record of leading staff and volunteers in a fast-paced environment.
  • Solid grounding in logistics, inventory management, and food safety.
  • Experience setting strategy, defining goals, and tracking the metrics that matter.
  • The ability to support fundraising through grants, partnerships, and donor relations.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • A proactive, solutions-first approach to problem-solving.
  • Comfort with digital tools: Google Workspace, CRMs, apps, and internal tracking systems.
  • The ability to lift up to 40 lbs and handle physical tasks in a warehouse or market setting.
  • A real passion for cutting food waste and advancing food security.

You'll thrive here if you lead with clarity and compassion, balance big-picture planning with hands-on execution, build trust easily with partners and community members, and stay steady as the program grows and changes.
Compensation and benefits:
  • $90,000-$110,000 salary, commensurate with experience
  • Fully covered medical, dental, and vision after 90 days
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Paid family leave
  • Flexible hybrid schedule
  • Cell phone and internet reimbursement
  • Professional development support
  • Team retreats and gatherings
  • Plenty of Sharing Excess merch
