Human Resources Coordinator

At The Salvation Army, the work you do every day helps support programs that change lives throughout our community. As the Human Resources Coordinator, you'll play an important role in supporting employees, helping managers succeed, and ensuring team members have the resources they need to thrive.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working with people, solving problems, staying organized, and building a career in Human Resources. You'll gain experience across many areas of HR, including employee relations, onboarding, leave administration, benefits, compliance, training, and HR operations.
Location: Des Moines, IA
Pay: $22-$25 per hour
Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, primarily daytime business hours

What You'll Do
In this role, you'll serve as a trusted HR partner for employees and managers while helping maintain efficient and compliant HR processes.
Employee Support & HR Administration
  • Help employees navigate HR programs, policies, and benefits
  • Maintain confidential employee records and HR documentation
  • Process employee changes, benefits enrollments, and HR transactions in ADP
  • Support payroll and timekeeping processes
  • Assist with onboarding and orientation for new employees
  • Ensure HR records are complete, accurate, and compliant
Leave & Benefits Administration
  • Coordinate employee leave processes, including FMLA, personal leaves, and workplace accommodations
  • Communicate with employees regarding leave requests and required documentation
  • Track leave activity and maintain accurate records
  • Assist employees with benefit questions and enrollment support
Employee Relations & Workplace Support
  • Partner with managers to address employee concerns and workplace issues
  • Assist with investigations, incident reporting, and documentation
  • Help promote a positive employee experience and respectful workplace culture
  • Provide guidance on HR policies and procedures
Training, Safety & Compliance
  • Support employee training initiatives and compliance programs
  • Assist with workplace safety efforts and committee activities
  • Help coordinate required HR and safety trainings
  • Support workers' compensation and incident reporting processes

We're looking for an organized and people-focused professional who enjoys supporting employees, maintaining accurate records, and helping create a positive workplace.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree in Human Resources, Business, or a related field, or equivalent work experience
  • One to two years of experience in HR, administrative support, payroll, recruiting, office management, or a related role
  • Experience using Microsoft Office, including Excel
  • Experience with ADP or another HRIS/timekeeping system is a plus
  • Familiarity with employee leaves, workplace safety, workers' compensation, or employment compliance is helpful but not required
