What is human performance in the workplace?

Human performance in the workplace refers to how effectively individuals or teams carry out their tasks, meet objectives, and contribute to organizational goals. It involves factors such as skills, motivation, work environment, processes, and human factors engineering. By understanding and optimizing these elements, organizations can improve productivity, reduce errors, and enhance employee well-being. Human performance specialists often analyze workflows, implement training programs, and recommend changes to improve overall outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a human performance specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Human Performance Specialist, you need expertise in exercise science, biomechanics, and physiology, typically supported by a degree in kinesiology or a related field. Familiarity with performance assessment tools, data analysis software, and certifications such as CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) are often required. Strong communication, motivational skills, and the ability to build rapport help clients achieve their performance goals. These competencies ensure the effective design and implementation of programs that optimize physical performance and well-being.

What are some of the main challenges faced by professionals in human performance roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Human Performance often encounter challenges such as effectively balancing individual and organizational goals, staying updated with the latest research in performance optimization, and tailoring interventions to diverse populations. To address these, it is important to engage in continuous professional development, collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams (such as coaches, medical staff, and HR), and use data-driven approaches to track and adjust performance strategies. Building strong communication skills and fostering a culture of feedback can also help overcome these challenges and drive successful outcomes.

What is the difference between Human Performance vs Human Factors Specialist?

Work EnvironmentWorkplaces include sports, military, corporate training, and performance consultingWorkplaces include research labs, aerospace, healthcare, and product design
Industry UsageUsed in sports, military, corporate training, and performance improvementUsed in product design, safety, healthcare, and research

Human Performance focuses on optimizing individual and team capabilities through training and techniques, often in sports or corporate settings. Human Factors Specialists analyze how humans interact with systems and design solutions to improve safety and usability. While both roles aim to enhance human efficiency, Human Performance emphasizes skill development, whereas Human Factors centers on system and interface design.

What jobs can I get with a human performance degree?

A human performance degree prepares individuals for careers such as exercise physiologist, sports coach, strength and conditioning specialist, fitness trainer, or rehabilitation specialist. These roles often require knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and performance analysis, and may involve certifications like ACSM or NSCA. Job opportunities are available in sports organizations, healthcare, fitness centers, and research settings.

Description Overview

The Technical Writer supports documentation creation and revision activities related to production processes, equipment operation, cleaning, testing, forms, logs, attachments, checklists, and other controlled documents.

The role goes beyond document production by assessing the training and capability impact of changes, capturing critical operational knowledge, improving usability of instructions, and supporting effective implementation of process changes.

This position works closely with cross-functional partners to ensure documentation is accurate, compliant, easy to follow, aligned with root cause and CAPA needs, and effective for the employees who perform the work.

Scope of the Role

Controlled Documentation & Technical Writing
Recommend, draft, revise, and maintain SOPs, standard work instructions, work aids, logs, forms, attachments, checklists, and other controlled documentation.
Prepare clear written descriptions of work processes using approved formats, templates, and style expectations.
Fulfill requests from the document change request process and clearly communicate barriers, resource needs, and timeline risks.
Ensure document content meets applicable quality, compliance, operational, and site requirements.
Training Impact & Change Implementation
Evaluate documentation changes to determine whether training, retraining, communication, or performance support is required.
Identify affected roles, departments, and employee populations impacted by procedural or process changes.
Partner with Training & Development, Master Trainers, Quality, Engineering, and Operations to support effective change implementation.
Support readiness planning for engineering changes, continuous improvement projects, CAPAs, new equipment, and procedural updates.
SME Interviewing, Knowledge Capture & Standardization
Interview and facilitate discussions with subject matter experts to understand current work processes, critical steps, decision points, common errors, and process gaps.
Capture tacit and tribal knowledge from experienced employees and translate it into standardized, usable documentation and learning resources.
Support development of knowledge repositories, visual references, job aids, and standardized resources that improve consistency across teams or sites.
Identify inconsistencies, ambiguity, or missing information in existing procedures and collaborate with SMEs to resolve gaps.
Human Performance, Usability & Visual Communication
Improve documentation usability by reducing unnecessary complexity, clarifying critical steps, and applying human performance improvement principles.
Develop visual work instructions, process maps, flowcharts, equipment annotations, job aids, photographs, and other visual supports as appropriate.
Consider how operators learn and execute work, including likely error points, task sequence, critical controls, and opportunities for visual or point-of-use support.
Assess whether documentation is practical, understandable, and effective for the intended users.
CAPA, Root Cause & Continuous Improvement Support
Participate in technical writer, continuous improvement, and CAPA-related meetings to understand priorities, scope of work, and rationale for procedural changes.
Contribute to CAPA-related projects by ensuring documentation changes align with the root cause and intended corrective or preventive action.
Use basic understanding of deviations, investigations, risk assessments, and process performance indicators to understand why procedures are changing.
Support continuous improvement by identifying document-related barriers that could contribute to errors, deviations, rework, or inconsistent execution.
Digital Learning & Content Enablement
Support development of digital job aids, micro-learning resources, LMS-supporting content, and electronic performance support materials when appropriate.
Use approved technology and AI-assisted content tools responsibly to improve drafting, version comparison, SME interview summaries, consistency, and productivity.
Measure and improve documentation effectiveness by gathering feedback, reviewing usability, and considering whether updates improve execution, reduce errors, support training effectiveness, or prevent recurrence.

Experience Required

  • Experience conducting SME interviews, capturing institutional knowledge, and standardizing documentation across teams and locations.
  • Understanding of quality and process improvement concepts, including CAPA, root cause analysis, risk assessment, process mapping, and workflow documentation.
