Job description

Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Human Factors Engineer – Advanced Nuclear

System One is hiring an I&C Human Factors Engineer to support a cutting-edge advanced nuclear program. This role focuses on integrating Human Factors Engineering (HFE) into digital control systems and human-system interfaces (HSIs) for next-generation reactor technology.

Responsibilities

  • Lead integration of Human Factors Engineering (HFE) into digital I&C systems and HSIs
  • Design and support development of control room interfaces, displays, and control systems
  • Apply HF principles to workstation, panel, and control room design (layout, reach, visibility, maintainability)
  • Support I&C system design from requirements through final implementation
  • Develop and review technical documentation (requirements, design descriptions, HFE analyses, UI specs)
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, operations, safety, and licensing teams
  • Support validation activities including HFE V&V and Integrated System Validation (ISV)
  • Ensure compliance with nuclear regulatory standards and design requirements
  • Participate in design reviews, change evaluations, and system integration efforts

Required Qualifications

  • M.S. or PhD in Human Factors, Industrial Engineering, or related field OR 8+ years of experience in Operations & Controls, Electrical, Computer, or Systems Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience in I&C engineering for complex or nuclear systems
  • Experience designing digital control/monitoring systems and Human-System Interfaces (HSIs)
  • 3+ years applying Human Factors principles to:
    • Human-computer interfaces (control room or process environments)
    • Workstation/panel design (layout, reach, visibility, maintainability)
  • Experience in I&C development, diagnostics, and implementation
  • Demonstrated ability to design and deliver industrial I&C platforms

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with nuclear HF and I&C standards:
    • NUREG-0711, NUREG-0700
    • MIL-STD-1472
    • IEEE 845, IEEE 1289, IEEE 2411
    • ANSI/ANS-3.1
    • 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, ASME NQA-1
  • Experience with nuclear plant operations, procedures, or HFE reviews
  • Exposure to P&IDs, process systems, or control system integration
