Human Computer Interaction Internship information

What types of projects can I expect to work on during a Human Computer Interaction Internship?

As a Human Computer Interaction (HCI) intern, you can expect to work on projects that involve user research, prototyping, usability testing, and interface design. Interns often collaborate closely with UX designers, software engineers, and product managers to improve the user experience of digital products. Typical tasks might include conducting user interviews, analyzing user data, designing wireframes, or testing interactive prototypes. The work environment is usually collaborative and iterative, with regular feedback and opportunities to contribute creative ideas.

What is a Human Computer Interaction Internship?

A Human Computer Interaction (HCI) Internship is a temporary training position where students or recent graduates gain practical experience working on projects that explore how people interact with computers and technology. Interns typically assist with user research, usability testing, prototyping, and interface design. The internship provides hands-on learning in areas like user experience (UX), user interface (UI) design, and human-centered computing, often in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. It is an opportunity to apply academic concepts to real-world problems and develop skills valued in technology and design industries.

What is the difference between Human Computer Interaction Internship vs User Experience Design Internship?

Both internships focus on improving user interactions with technology but differ in emphasis. Human Computer Interaction internships lean toward research, usability testing, and understanding human factors, while User Experience Design internships focus on designing user interfaces and enhancing overall user satisfaction. Candidates should choose based on their interest in research versus design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Human Computer Interaction Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Human Computer Interaction Intern, you generally need foundational knowledge in user experience (UX) design, usability principles, and human-centered research, often supported by coursework or a degree in HCI, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with prototyping tools (such as Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD), usability testing platforms, and analytics software is typically required. Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills help interns contribute effectively to multidisciplinary teams and adapt to user feedback. These abilities are crucial for creating intuitive, user-focused digital experiences and supporting product development with actionable insights.

Senior UI/UX Designer

Render's singular focus is best summarised by our purpose; continuously innovate and evolve technology to build networks better and connect communities.

Render's geospatial network construction platform enables telecommunication network operators and construction teams to digitize the construction workflow and cut the time and cost of large-scale fiber deployment.

With greater than $60B in annual US network infrastructure investment forecast to continue for the next decade, the need for technology-enabled efficiency and construction innovation is acute.
Render's market-leading platform is experiencing rapid adoption, and in partnership with new majority partners IFM Investors, Render is perfectly positioned to build on existing momentum and realize significant incremental growth.

Our partnership with IFM Investors further empowers us to fast-track Render's next wave of product innovation for our customers and the evolving global telecommunications industry, and we are looking for exceptional talent to join us on the journey.

Our team all have a genuine passion for innovation and technology's role in enabling global communities to thrive. Beyond our work, our values shape everything that we do at Render and we can not overstate how central these statements are to our culture:

  • Lead Boldly with Courageous Innovation
  • Integrity and Accountability
  • Put Customers at the Center

The Role You Will Play

We are looking for a dynamic UI/UX designer who will own the complete user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design of the overall Render system. This role will ensure that Render's solutions are intuitive, efficient, elegantly designed, and delivers measurable impact for customers building and managing large-scale network deployments. The successful candidate will have a passion for delivering world class customer experiences (CX) with adaptive and creative solutions to UI/UX design problems by staying up to date with best practices and emerging trends in user experience design and user interface technology. Because Render focuses on the use of geospatial technology in utility infrastructure workflows, this role must have deep experience delivering software solutions with a map-based spatial user interface on the desktop and in the field.

This role is highly customer-facing which includes continuous user research to gather insights into customer needs, behaviors, and pain points through surveys, interviews, and usability testing to inform design decisions. It is also a highly collaborative role, working closely with cross-functional teams at Render including product management, customer delivery, and pre-sales to ensure a cohesive and seamless customer experience. Across these responsibilities, the ideal allocation of time in this role is likely to be 50% of time researching and designing strategic user experiences across the combined platform, 30% of time on customer research and market research to build a competitive and seamless Render user experience, including component library, site map streamlining, and design architecture, etc., and 20% as the company resource for quick input or low fidelity wireframes for product enhancements.
Your Mission @ Render
  • Own the user experience design requirements for the entire Render platform across web, mobile, and BI interfaces.

  • Develop and conceptualize a comprehensive UI/UX design strategy for the Render platform.

  • Produce high-quality UX design solutions through wireframes, visual and graphic designs, flow diagrams, storyboards, site maps, and prototypes.

  • Conduct user research by gathering insights into customer needs, behaviors, and pain points through surveys, interviews, and usability testing.

  • Develop detailed customer journey maps to visualize the end-to-end customer experience and identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Craft intuitive and visually appealing user interfaces that enhance the customer experience across all application touchpoints.

  • Analyze customer data and feedback to identify trends and inform design decisions.

  • Work closely with product managers, developers, marketing teams, and other stakeholders to ensure a cohesive and aligned customer experience.

  • Develop prototypes and conduct user testing to gather feedback and iterate on designs.

  • Monitor and evaluate the customer experience continuously, implementing improvements based on user feedback and evolving needs.

Who You Are:
  • Bachelor's degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field.

  • 6+ years of experience in customer experience design, user experience design, or a similar role.

  • Strong portfolio showcasing experience in user research, journey mapping, and interaction design for both web and mobile platforms.

  • Specific experience in the design of digital mapping solutions

  • Proficiency in design tools such as Sketch, Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and prototyping tools.

  • Working knowledge of the following technologies and software: Sketch, InVision, Visio, HTML, CSS (SCSS), iOS, Android, Design Systems, and Adobe Creative Suite.

  • Strong multi-tasking and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work in a virtual and distributed work environment.

  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.

  • A team player who can work independently as well.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, agile environment.

  • Experience in field-worker-oriented software solutions for construction, field service management, or data collection (preferred)
$150,000 - $150,000 a year
