Human Computer Interaction Intern information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Human Computer Interaction Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Human Computer Interaction Intern, you need foundational knowledge in user experience (UX) design, usability testing, and human-centered design, often supported by coursework in HCI, psychology, or computer science. Familiarity with design tools like Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD, as well as prototyping and basic coding skills, is typically expected. Strong communication, collaboration, and curiosity help interns effectively gather user feedback and work in multidisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for creating intuitive digital products that meet user needs and business goals.

What does a Human Computer Interaction Intern do?

A Human Computer Interaction (HCI) Intern supports research and development projects focused on improving the ways people interact with computers, software, and digital devices. They may assist in designing user interfaces, conducting usability testing, analyzing user feedback, and prototyping interactive systems. HCI interns typically work with multidisciplinary teams to help create products that are intuitive, accessible, and user-friendly. Their work contributes to enhancing the overall user experience and making technology more effective and enjoyable to use.

What kinds of projects and collaborations can a Human Computer Interaction Intern expect during their internship?

As a Human Computer Interaction (HCI) Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects that may include user research, usability testing, prototyping, and interface design. Interns typically collaborate closely with UX/UI designers, software engineers, and product managers to translate user needs into impactful design solutions. You'll likely participate in team meetings, contribute to brainstorming sessions, and present findings or prototypes to stakeholders. These experiences offer valuable exposure to the iterative design process in a real-world setting and help build both technical and communication skills.

We are FIS. Our technology powers the world's economy and our teams bring innovation to life. We champion diversity to deliver the best products and solutions for our colleagues, clients and communities. If you're ready to start learning, growing and making an impact with a career in fintech, we'd like to know: Are you FIS?

NOTE:

  • This position is hybrid (3 days onsite) in our FIS Office locations in Chicago (Illinois), Milwaukee (Wisconsin) and Jacksonville (Florida).
  • Current and future sponsorship not available for this position

About the Team:

We are the premiere digital transformation partner for financial institutions committed to the future of banking and to creating safe and personalized customer experiences that help people better manage their financial lives. Our fully integrated and flexible platform is built on years of digital lending experience, enabling digital agility within months and a full suite of end-to-end consumer, small business and embedded finance solutions that fit the way people want to bank.

FIS technology powers the world's economy and our teams bring innovation to life. If you are ready to start learning, growing, and making an impact with a career in fintech, we encourage you to apply. Are you FIS?

About the Role:

As a UI/UX Software Engineer, you'll find yourself immersed in a dynamic and collaborative work environment. Your day will involve hands-on coding, problem-solving, and contributing to the development of cutting-edge financial technology solutions. You'll work closely with cross-functional teams to understand requirements, design robust software, and implement scalable solutions to address complex challenges in the fintech landscape.

What You Will Be Doing:

  • UI Implementation: Take ownership of building high-fidelity, visually consistent interfaces using a shared design system, ensuring every feature aligns with our business objectives.
  • UX & Product Thinking: Collaborate with Product and Design to understand user personas and pain points, identifying UX gaps or edge cases proactively to enhance the overall user journey.
  • Design System Fidelity: Accurately translate Figma designs into responsive layouts using design tokens and shared styles, maintaining strict information hierarchy and visual alignment.
  • Accessibility & Quality: Implement accessible markup (Semantic HTML, keyboard navigation, WCAG standards) and conduct thorough UI testing to ensure the reliability and performance of our front-end.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay abreast of front-end trends and design system best practices to avoid technical debt and minimize UX regressions like layout shifts or broken tab orders.
TECH STACK: ReactJs, TypeScript, HTML5/CSS3, Styled Components, Figma, GraphQL, Storybook, Jest + Testing Library, Cypress, Nx, Jenkins, Git, Jira, Confluence, AWS, Kubernetes, Docker

What you Bring:

  • Experience: A minimum of 1-3+ years of experience in front-end software engineering, with a focus on SaaS or FinTech, is preferred.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong proficiency in ReactJs, TypeScript, and modern CSS/SCSS, with a deep understanding of how to consume RESTful APIs. Familiarity with testing suites (Jest/Cypress) and CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, Git) to deploy high-quality UI is highly valued.
  • Innovation & AI: A passion for innovation and a keen interest in staying ahead of the curve with emerging technologies (like AI-assisted development tools). Proven ability to contribute to the development of forward-thinking solutions.
  • Tools of the Trade: Experience with Jira, Confluence, and Figma (or similar design hand-off tools) is a plus!
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to analyze complex user flows, propose effective technical solutions, and implement them with a focus on performance and maintainability.
  • Collaborative Spirit: Excellent communication skills and the ability to articulate why a UI behaves a certain way, contributing to a positive and inclusive workplace culture.
  • Education: A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field is preferred.

What We Offer You:

  • A voice in the future of fintech.
  • Continuous learning and development.
  • Collaborative work environment.
  • Opportunities to give back.
  • Competitive salary and benefits.
