About This Role

This position is for the Lead Teacher in our 4-Day-4s class. It is a part-time position, Monday-Thursday from 8:30 am-12:30 pm, beginning August 24, 2026 through May 27, 2027. We follow Lynchburg City Schools for most holidays and closings/delays, with some after-school hours commitments. We are looking for someone with a heart for preschool children and their families, who is dedicated, hard-working, and willing to share God's love and plan with preschoolers. HUM Preschool is a Religious Exempt Center with a play-based hands-on approach to learning.


What You'll Do
  • Responsible for the overall administration of the classroom by providing the best possible physical, educational, emotional, and spiritual environment for the children assigned to their class(es).
  • Responsible for working with special needs children and their families, in accordance with the non-discrimination policy stating that “no child is excluded from admission because of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, or handicap.”
  • To maintain the confidentiality of the children, families, and staff of HUM Preschool.
  • Prepare monthly lesson plans in keeping with the philosophy and curriculum of the Preschool program, VDoE’s Developmental Standards, and the needs of the individual children in the class. These plans should be completed one week before the beginning of a new month and reviewed with the Assistant Teacher so that they clearly understand their responsibilities in the preparation of materials and projects.
  • Prepare a detailed monthly calendar for families to use at home.
  • Have the detailed monthly calendar reviewed by the Director one week before the beginning of each month.
  • To be familiar with manipulatives, library books, and unit resources.
  • To maintain a safe, clean classroom environment.
  • Be available for parent conferences as needed or requested.
  • Complete Fall Profiles in October, Winter Assessments in January, and Spring Assessments in May.
  • 4s/Pre-Ks Teachers – Conduct Parent Teacher Conferences in January.
  • Have lesson plans easily accessible and up-to-date in the event of absence.
  • Maintain Student Folders and/or Journals in accordance with Classroom Policies and Procedures designated in the Staff Handbook.
  • To communicate with families in their class at least weekly. This should include reminders of special events, special requests, and planned activities in accordance with their lesson plans and school-wide activities.
  • Assist in the carline as needed.
  • Assist in the set up/take down of the playground/gym as needed.
  • To change diapers/pull-ups or assist the children in the bathroom as needed.
  • The Lead Teacher is directly accountable to and must work under the supervision of the Director, and under the supervision of the Assistant Director when the Director is not present in the building.
  • Conduct the classroom in accordance with the Classroom Policies and Procedures designated in the Staff Handbook.
  • Attend monthly Preschool staff meetings (approximately 1 hour in length).
  • Attend the following after-school activities: Meet Your Teacher, CPR and First Aid classes (every other year), Family Pancake Dinner, Spring Art Show, and Preschool Sunday at HUMC.
  • Personal Days – One more than the number of days per week that you work plus any unused days (no more than 5) from the previous year; requested personal days may not include any days on which special programs are planned (Meet Your Teacher days, Thanksgiving Feast, Christmas Concert, Professional Development Days, Teacher Work Days, Family Pancake Dinner, Art Show, Preschool Sunday Concert, Graduation, Field Day, Farm Day, Patriotic Bike Parade, Last Week of School) except in case of emergency. Special exceptions will be considered by the Director on an individual basis.

Requirements
  • Maturity and sensitivity in working with young children, families, and other staff.
  • Ability to comfortably share God’s love and plan with young children.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Experience working with young children is preferred.
  • Must be able to physically care for and play with Preschool children.
  • College degree, certification, or appropriate programmatic experience required.
  • Must pass appropriate background checks.
  • Must submit a Sworn Disclosure Statement annually.
  • Must annually present a physician-signed Staff Health form attesting to the physical ability to care for children.
  • Must annually complete Professional Development/Continuing Education requirements of 10 hours of training or professional growth. These may include CPR and First Aid certification, Child Abuse and Neglect Awareness training, and Daily Health Inspection training as needed.
