Job description

In Row Heat Exchange Technician for Data Cooling Systems:

Location: Chantilly/ Herndon/ Frederick MD

Required: Journeyman License in HVAC, Piping, or Mechanical/ Electrical Systems in DC OR MD OR VA

Pay: $57.30/hr affiliated with the Local 602 Union

Hours: M-F 7a-3p with daily OT available

Position Overview

GMS is seeking highly skilled Journeyman-Level IRHX Service Technicians to support Level 2 (Pre-Startup Verification) and Level 3 (Startup & Commissioning) activities for advanced IRHX cooling systems in hyperscale data centers. This role is critical to ensuring operational readiness and compliance with project commissioning standards. Technicians will perform mechanical inspections, electrical verification, and commissioning tasks in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.

Core Responsibilities

  • Execute Level 2 Pre-Startup Verification (PSV): Inspect IRHX modules, verify mechanical/electrical assemblies, identify deficiencies, and perform corrective actions.
  • Perform Level 3 Startup & Commissioning: Energize equipment safely, program ECM fans and VFDs, validate sensors, troubleshoot operational issues, and complete commissioning documentation.
  • Maintain strict adherence to safety protocols and structured workflows.
  • Communicate effectively with Mechanical Contractors (MC), General Contractors (GC), and internal GMS teams.
  • Represent GMS professionally in hyperscale data center environments.

Required Qualifications

  • Journeyman-level license in one jurisdiction: MD, VA, or DC.
  • 3–5 years of experience at journeyman level in HVAC, piping, or mechanical/electrical systems.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with hydronic systems (pumps, coils, glycol loops).
  • Electrical proficiency: control wiring, Modbus networks, and ability to read wiring diagrams.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical deficiencies independently.
  • Familiarity with VFDs, ECM motors, and digital control systems.
  • Competence in completing technical documentation accurately.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience in mission-critical environments (data centers or similar).
  • Proven experience with equipment startup and commissioning processes.
  • Advanced knowledge of low-voltage control wiring systems and networked controls.
  • OSHA 30, NFPA 70E, and Lockout/Tagout certifications highly preferred.
