What is an hourly video streaming engineer?

Hourly Video Streaming Engineers are technical professionals responsible for setting up, maintaining, and troubleshooting live and on-demand video streaming systems, often on an hourly contract basis. They ensure smooth video delivery, manage encoding and transcoding processes, and resolve streaming issues in real-time. Their expertise is crucial for organizations that need reliable video streams for events, broadcasts, or digital platforms but may not require full-time staff for these services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an hourly video streaming engineer?

To thrive as an Hourly Video Streaming Engineer, you need expertise in video encoding, streaming protocols (such as HLS and DASH), and a solid understanding of networking fundamentals, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with tools like FFmpeg, Wowza, OBS Studio, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) is often required, along with relevant certifications in cloud or video technologies. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help you address technical challenges and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for ensuring seamless, high-quality streaming experiences and quick resolution of issues in a dynamic environment.

What are some common challenges faced by an hourly video streaming engineer, and how can they be addressed?

Hourly Video Streaming Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring smooth video delivery during peak traffic times, troubleshooting latency or buffering issues, and adapting to rapidly changing streaming technologies. To navigate these challenges, it’s important to stay updated on the latest streaming protocols, maintain clear documentation, and collaborate closely with network and support teams. Proactive monitoring and quick problem-solving skills are essential for maintaining a high-quality viewer experience.

Principal Frontend Engineer (Full Stack)

Vumedi Inc.

Oak, NE • On-site

Full-time

Job description

About Vumedi

Vumedi is the largest video education platform for doctors worldwide, dedicated to advancing medical education through innovative video-based learning. Every day, physicians around the world rely on Vumedi to learn new procedures, discover clinical insights, and stay current with the latest advances in medicine.

We're building the next generation of medical education combining AI, video, and modern product experiences to help doctors find the knowledge they need faster than ever before.

Headquartered in Oakland, CA, with additional offices in Minneapolis and Zagreb, Croatia, we're a mission-driven team solving meaningful technical challenges at global scale.

What You'll Do

We're looking for a Principal Frontend Engineer (Full Stack) who loves building exceptional products as much as solving hard technical problems.

This is a highly hands-on engineering role where you'll own experiences end-to-end-from designing intuitive React interfaces to building the backend services that power them. You'll work closely with Product, Design, AI, and Engineering leadership to bring ambitious ideas to life and ship features that thousands of physicians use every day.

You'll help define what AI-native medical education looks like.

In this role, you'll:
  • Design and build polished, high-performance product experiences using React, TypeScript, Javascript and modern frontend technologies.
  • Build the backend APIs and services that power those experiences using Python and Django.
  • Partner closely with Product and Design to turn complex workflows into intuitive user experiences.
  • Develop AI-powered features using LLMs including intelligent search, recommendations, summarization, conversational experiences, and workflow automation.
  • Build across the full stack, owning features from concept and architecture through deployment and iteration.
  • Drive frontend architecture, reusable component systems, and engineering best practices that improve velocity across the team.
  • Collaborate with Data and AI engineers to integrate machine learning models and intelligent services into production applications.
  • Improve performance, reliability, accessibility, and overall user experience across the platform.
  • Mentor engineers through technical leadership, design reviews, and collaborative problem solving.
  • Help shape the future technical direction of Vumedi while remaining deeply involved in writing code every day.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys building beautiful products, loves owning features end-to-end, and gets excited about using AI to create entirely new user experiences.

Who You Are
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building modern web applications.
  • Experience as a Senior, Staff, or Principal Engineer with a track record of leading complex product development.
  • Strong expertise building frontend applications with React, TypeScript, and modern JavaScript frameworks.
  • Solid backend experience with Python, Django, and RESTful APIs.
  • Passion for creating intuitive, high-quality user experiences and not just functional interfaces.
  • Experience integrating LLMs or AI capabilities into production products.
  • Comfortable working across the full stack and choosing the right technologies for the problem.
  • Strong understanding of API design, databases, caching, authentication, and cloud-based application development.
  • Experience building scalable applications on AWS or similar cloud platforms.
  • Excellent product instincts and the ability to collaborate closely with Product, Design, and Engineering.
  • A builder's mindset - you enjoy prototyping quickly, shipping often, and iterating based on user feedback.

Bonus points for experience with:

  • AI agents, RAG, vector databases, or semantic search
  • Video streaming or media platforms
  • Design systems and component libraries
  • Performance optimization and frontend architecture
  • Search, recommendation systems, or personalization
Why Vumedi?

Build products that matter: Your work helps physicians around the world access life-saving knowledge and improve patient care.

Build AI into real products: You'll create intelligent product experiences using LLMs, not just prototypes or demos.

Own features end-to-end: From frontend interactions to backend services, you'll have the autonomy to build complete solutions.

Shape the future of the platform: As a Principal Engineer, you'll influence architecture, engineering culture, and product direction while staying close to the code.

Work with exceptional teammates: Collaborate with experienced engineers, product leaders, designers, and AI specialists across the US and Europe.

This is a hybrid role based in Oakland, CA, with in-office collaboration Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
