SUMMARY
JOB DESCRIPTION
This is a student position responsible for assisting in the operations and activities of the SFA Gardens Environmental Education Program. Promotes a positive learning environment for K-12 grade students and/or adults attending education programs at SFA Gardens or at outreach locations. Works under general supervision, with some latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.
QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum education required for admittance as a student at Stephen F. Austin State University is required. Admittance as a graduate student at Stephen F. Austin State University in one of the following fields: biology, environmental science, earth sciences, forestry, or education is preferred.
College coursework or equivalent in geology, soils, climate and/or water resources of Texas is preferred. College coursework or equivalent on the flora and fauna of east Texas is preferred.
No direct experience is required. Training and instruction will be provided. Experience working as an outdoor youth camp director, counselor or assistant is preferred.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Assists in preparing, organizing and maintaining resources and materials used in educational programs at SFA Gardens.
- Assists in training volunteers for educational programs.
- Develops or compiles educational programs or activities for K-12 students and adults.
- Leads educational programs or activities for K-12 students and adults.
- Collects data and assists in reporting about educational programs at SFA Gardens.
- Attends required training, if needed.
- Attends professional development opportunities to improve techniques and confidence in delivering educational programs, as available.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
A student must be enrolled in six or more semester hours to be eligible for student employment during the fall or spring semesters. To be eligible for student employment during the summer, a student must be enrolled in three or more semester hours or be registered for courses in the upcoming fall semester.
Student assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a graduate assistantship or temporary casual employment at the same time that they are employed as a student assistant.
