Job Overview

Research Assistant, Department of Radiation Medicine/ School of Medicine - Georgetown University.

The Research Assistant will play a key role in advancing radiation-related and space research projects, with an emphasis on molecular biology, biochemistry, -omics approaches, and in vivo/in vitro experimental work. This position requires hands-on execution of complex experiments, meticulous sample processing, and contribution to data analysis and figure preparation. The scope of work will evolve with new projects and emerging research priorities.

Additional duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct radiation-focused experiments involving cell cultures and animal models (mice), including sample collection (biofluids, tissues).

  • Process biological samples (cell, human, and mouse biofluids and tissues) for large-scale data acquisition.

  • Perform molecular biology and biochemical assays, including (but not limited to) DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, RT-qPCR, protein isolation, ELISA, colorimetric and fluorescent assays, histology, and western blotting.

  • Assist with basic bioinformatic analysis, data visualization, and preparation of graphs and figures for publications and presentations.

  • Support general laboratory operations, including ordering supplies, equipment maintenance, and lab organization.

Work Interactions

The candidate will have a central role in the laboratory's radiation related studies, including basic and pre-clinical studies under NIH and NASA grants. These projects rely heavily on in vivo irradiation of select mouse models and collection of tissues and biofluids. Highly technical and inter-personal skills are required as the candidate will have a central role in communicating with core facility members. Student support will also be needed, with providing training and assistance in specific laboratory techniques. Travel for completion of studies in other institutions may be needed, up to 3 weeks at a time.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Master's degree in biology, biochemistry, or related field; or Bachelor's degree with significant research experience.

  • Demonstrated experience in mouse handling; familiarity with mouse surgical techniques preferred.

  • Basic computer skills and statistical analysis.

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, accurate record-keeping, and ability to work independently on multiple projects simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior training in radiation biology, including basic dosimetry assessment.

  • Experience with microscopy and advanced molecular biology techniques.

  • Tissue culture and animal handling, or willingness to acquire these skills.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including scientific documentation and reporting.

  • Programming in R or Python

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
