Job description

Car Driver
Salary: $14.30/hr. (Hourly Position-No Benefits Included)
Primary Purpose

1. Know and effectively communicate the division philosophy and mission.
2. Ability to operate a school county car safely and efficiently.
3. Follow oral and written instructions.  
4. Communicate effectively with colleagues, staff, parents, and students.
5. Able to read, understand and apply information relating to trip planning.  
6. Obey all traffic laws and observe all mandatory safety regulations.
7. Maintain discipline when students are in the car and report unacceptable student behavior to the proper authority.
8. Keep assigned county car clean.  
9. Keep to assigned schedule and discharge students only at authorized stops.  
10. Check car before each operation for mechanical defects.  
11. Notify the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness.
12. Transport only authorized students.
13. Report all accidents and completes required reports.
14.  Enforce Northampton Code of Behavior.
15. Capable of driving extended periods of time, up to the maximum allowable times, safely, under a variety of conditions, mountain driving, and spending up to 80% of on duty time in the vehicle for an extended period. 16. Able to properly load, unload, and secure students.
17. Able to repeatedly bend at the waist and neck, twist and rotate hands, wrists, shoulders, elbows, and forearms.  
18. Able to grip and grasp repeatedly and operate foot pedals.  
19. Able to withstand abrupt hour changes, noise and vibration, temperature and weather extremes.  
20. Able to appraise, evaluate, and adequately respond to environmental strain and emotional stress.  
21. Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned.  
Additional Duties
Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the safety of the passengers in a county vehicle.

Equipment
  • County vehicle, safety belts, car seats, harness, first aid kit, etc.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • General knowledge of the transportation of students preferred;
  • Some knowledge of transporting students with special needs preferred;
  • Ability to assist students with patience and understanding;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, parents, students and colleagues;
  • Some standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling;
  • Must have the ability to drag 80 lbs. and lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Works on a standard county vehicle.

Qualification Profile
Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying.  Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid Drivers License
