Job Description:

Under the leadership of the Administrative Manager and Assistant Director of Behavioral Health Services, and under the direction and clinical supervision of a Psychiatrist and/or Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, the Outpatient Behavioral Health Technician provides both clinical and administrative support to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care and efficient clinic operations.

Responsibilities include performing basic administrative, technical, and medical support services for licensed Psychiatrists and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners. Key duties involve accurately scheduling patients, conducting appointment reminder calls, screening for insurance authorizations, entering clinic charges, providing pre-registration information to Patient Access, and assisting with medical record management.

This position requires strong organizational and time-management skills, attention to detail, and the ability to function effectively in a fast-paced environment where multitasking is essential and interruptions are frequent.

Clinical responsibilities include, but are not limited to, obtaining vital signs and weight measurements, administering injectable medications, monitoring patients following medication administration, and managing the inventory of injectable medications. The Outpatient Behavioral Health Technician also administers Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatments, obtains prior authorizations, and coordinates the scheduling of TMS services.

Additional duties include processing medication refill requests, obtaining prior authorizations for medications, and gathering medication histories for provider review using the electronic health record (EHR) and the Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System (CURES). The technician assists patients with completing self-assessment tools and prepares, processes, and tracks forms and documents requiring provider review, input, or signature.

The Outpatient Behavioral Health Technician may facilitate welfare checks and utilize de-escalation techniques during telephone interactions when clinically indicated. Throughout these situations, the technician maintains ongoing communication with the provider and ensures appropriate documentation of interventions, communications, and outcomes.

The Outpatient Behavioral Health Technician is cross-trained to perform duties at all clinic workstations, rotates assignments and shifts as operational needs require, and performs other duties as assigned.

Experience

Previous experience with mental health/substance abuse patients is preferred. Demonstrated ability to write routine reports and correspondence using proper grammar and spelling. Ability to speak effectively with patients, customers or employees of the organization. Must maintain strict patient confidentiality, adhering to all HIPAA guidelines and regulations. Familiar with a PC and basic software, such as Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Word, etc.

Must be able to provide medical support to include IM and subcutaneous injections, vital signs and provide continuous observation of patients undergoing medical treatment at the clinic.

Education

Medical Assistant Certificate is required.

Licensure/Certifications

National Healthcareer Association certification or equivalent must be obtained within 6 months of hire. American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS certification is required.
