ABOUT DLS
Diagnostic Laboratory Services, Inc. (DLS) is Hawaii's largest locally owned and operated clinical and anatomic pathology laboratory. DLS is proud to serve the communities of Hawaii, Guam and Saipan and utilizes state-of-the-art testing and value-based informatics to promote optimal patient care to positively impact patient lives.
SCHEDULE
Regular Full-Time Position
Must be available Sunday through Saturday from 6:00 am to 3:00 pm, including holidays.
Must be flexible with schedule changes to meet operational needs.
HIRING RANGE
$36.00 to $45.22 hourly
Actual pay commensurate with experience
Eligible for Sign-on Bonus
JOB SUMMARY
Supports laboratory operations by assisting in supervising employees and daily activities, including scheduling, training, supply management, and issue resolution. Performs a range of clinical lab tests across various specialties. Conducts analyses on specimens in compliance with regulatory standards.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Assists with supervising employees and the day-to-day operations of the site and/or shift, managing schedules, training and troubleshooting issues. (50%)
  2. Performs a variety of clinical laboratory tests in the areas of hematology, microbiology, molecular, immunology, chemistry, blood bank, coagulation and/or urinalysis, as assigned; conducts quantitative and qualitative analyses on samples such as blood, urine, stool, tissue and body fluids. (30%)
    • Performs quality control on test results, ensuring validity and accuracy.
    • Conducts blood tests for transfusion purposes.
    • May develop and maintain cell/tissue cultures for testing purposes, as appropriate; isolates and identifies specimens, using advanced laboratory techniques.
    • Keeps records and reports on results according to established procedures.
    • Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
    • Monitors and maintains adequate supply inventory needed for testing in department.
    • Performs calibration, troubleshooting and maintenance on testing systems and instruments to ensure adherence to established standards of accuracy. Maintenance may include, testing system upkeep, troubleshooting, cleaning, sterility testing and quality control.
  3. Supports laboratory and hospital operations as required. (10%)
  • Perform collections as required and may serve as a witness on behalf of DLS.
    • Phlebotomy.
    • Forensic toxicology urine and blood collections and Breath Alcohol Testing.
    • Nasal, observed nasal, and/or nasopharyngeal collections.
    • Blood bank banding.
  • Prepares samples to transport/ship to Central Laboratory or designated reference laboratory for testing.
  • May accession laboratory test requests, including keying patient demographics into the Laboratory Information System (LIS). May perform accessioning of specimen orders.
  • Provides morgue services 24/hours, 7 days/week, 365 days/year -follows all morgue procedures to meet regulatory requirements for the handling of bodies related to morgue duties. Follows operational guidelines to perform morgue duties.
  • QMC Punchbowl: May oversee Perioperative services, collecting and analyzing data to ensure compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies.
  1. Ensures operations of assigned area meet regulatory and accreditation requirements. (10%)
    • Maintains, updates and guides employees to follow SOPs.
    • Completes competency assessments, proficiency testing and investigations timely.
    • Supports laboratory inspection and accreditation activities.
    • May develop, implement and maintain quality control and assurance programs.
    • May serve as General Supervisor and/or Technical Consultant/Supervisor to meet CLIA requirements. Refer to Laboratory Personnel and Licensure Requirements policy (QI- 11-PER- 01) for performance assessment and regulatory responsibilities.

JOB DEMANDS
Typical Physical Demands:
  • Requires manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination, and corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
  • Able to distinguish and identify colors.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, lab coats, face shields, respirator, etc.
  • Able to lift, carry, push or pull items weighing up to thirty-five (35) pounds occasionally.
  • Able to stand, sit, bend and key up to six (6) hours intermittently.
  • Able to perform repetitive manual motion such as, but not limited to, pipetting, capping and uncapping specimens.
  • Depending on work location:
    • Able to walk up to six (6) hours frequently.
    • Able to drive and get in/out of company vehicle up to six (6) hours frequently.
    • Requires occasional ground or air travel.

Typical Working Conditions:
  • Work environment includes conditions common to a hospital/laboratory environment, including working directly with potentially hazardous chemicals and/or patients with communicable diseases. Potential for inadvertent skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials.
  • Generally works in an indoor, air-conditioned area.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Required
  • Medical Technologist: Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution.
  • Medical Laboratory Technician: Associate degree in medical laboratory technology/technician from an accredited institution.

Experience:
  • Four (4) years as an MLT, or two (2) years as an MLT plus one (1) year of supervisory experience; OR
  • Three (3) years as a Medical Technologist/Specialist, or two (2) years as an MT/Specialist plus one (1) year of supervisory experience.

Certification:
Required:
Hawaii:
  • Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Technologist or Specialist in the assigned/responsible laboratory discipline by an agency recognized by the Hawaii Department of Health State Laboratories Division.

Guam:
  • Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) in the assigned/responsible laboratory discipline recognized by an agency recognized by the Hawaii Department of Health State Laboratories Division.

Preferred:
  • Guam: Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification.
  • Saipan: Certification (as mentioned above).

Hawaii: Exemption - "Current DLS personnel who were licensed as a Technologist, Specialist or Technician by the State of Hawaii prior to the effective date of Hawaii Administrative Rules 11- 110 (October 19, 2002)."
Licensure:
Required:
  • Hawaii: State license as a Technologist, Technician, or Specialist as appropriate.

Required:
  • Valid driver's license and/or able to travel between business locations.
  • If required to drive a company vehicle, a valid driver's license (full license, not provisional or intermediate) and current acceptable traffic abstract is required.
  • Positions performing bench coverage in the Blood Bank department must possess a current Hawaii State license as a Medical Technologist unless otherwise approved by the Laboratory Director.
