The City of Saint Charles Public Works Department is currently recruiting for the position of General Facility Worker. The purpose of this position is to perform routine maintenance and manual labor related to cleaning city facilities and buildings.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  • Daily custodial duties include open City Hall; Clean and maintain City facilities and restrooms; prepare conference rooms; Inspect building equipment systems such as heating and air conditioning units; Report irregularities; Paint and repair walls; Collect parking garage Bio Hazard cleaning of cells at Justice Center will be required as needed.
  • Operate a variety of maintenance equipment and power tools.
  • Mow and maintain landscaping at City Hall and all city facilities; Plow, salt and shovel snow as directed for sidewalks and roadways at City facilities including parking lots.
  • Assist with annual surplus sale and all City festivals and special events.
  • Assist Maintenance Mechanic and Administrative staff as needed.
  • Mandatory attendance and participation in: rotating on-call schedule, assigned overtime, civil emergencies, severe weather events including flooding and snow removal operations, special events, and call-outs.
  • Light Plumbing and Electrical work.
  • Electrical: Diagnose and replace faulty light switches, receptacles and lighting ballasts. Replace light bulbs.
  • Plumbing: Replace faucets, Flush valves, P traps, and cable drains.

Minimum Training and Experience Required
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Knowledge of hand tools and of maintenance needs of public building facilities.
  • Knowledge of and experience in building custodial work.
  • Knowledge of basic aspects pertaining to electricity and plumbing.

Physical Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
  • Ability to perform moderate manual labor for prolonged periods of time under difficult and/or severe weather working conditions including noise, odors and exhaust, traffic, extreme heat, cold, wind, rain, snow, sleet, etc. while, either alone or in combination thereof, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting, reaching, pushing, and pulling.
  • Ability to frequently lift and carry equipment and materials weighing 25 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds, a minimum distance of 10 feet.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
