Job description

Position Summary

The Excavation Laborer supports site development and earthwork operations by assisting with grading, excavation, utility installation, erosion control, and general jobsite tasks. This role is critical to keeping projects moving safely, efficiently, and to JL Wesley quality standards. The ideal candidate is hardworking, dependable, safety-minded, and willing to learn multiple aspects of civil construction.

Key Responsibilities

· Assist with site preparation including grading, trenching, backfilling, and compaction

· Install silt fence, inlet protection, and other erosion control measures

· Assist pipe crews with storm, sanitary, and waterline installation

· Shovel, rake, and fine grade dirt, stone, and asphalt surfaces

· Spot equipment operators and trucks safely around the jobsite

· Load and unload materials, tools, and equipment

· Maintain a clean and organized jobsite

· Operate small tools such as plate compactors, saws, lasers, and hand tools

· Help with form setting, concrete prep, and restoration work

· Follow directions from foreman and work as part of a crew

· Perform general labor as needed to keep production moving

Safety Responsibilities

· Follow all JL Wesley safety policies and OSHA/MSHA requirements

· Wear required PPE at all times (hard hat, vest, boots, eye and ear protection)

· Participate in daily job briefings and safety meetings

· Identify and report hazards immediately

· Work safely around heavy equipment and truck traffic

· Maintain situational awareness at all times

Qualifications

· Required:

· Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

· Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions

· Strong work ethic and positive attitude

· Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team

· Willingness to work overtime when required

· Preferred:

· Experience in site development, utilities, or concrete

· CDL or ability to obtain

· Experience operating skid steer, mini-ex, or compaction equipment

· OSHA 10 or MSHA certification

Physical Requirements

· Lift and carry up to 75 lbs regularly

· Stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb throughout the day

· Enter and exit trenches and equipment safely

· Work 8–12 hour shifts, including early mornings

· Ability to climb ladders and slopes

· Perform repetitive motions with hands and arms

Work Environment

· Outdoor construction sites with uneven terrain

· Exposure to dust, noise, vibration, and weather

· Working around heavy equipment and truck traffic

· Travel to various jobsites within Indiana
