What Does A Lifeguard Do?

  • Maintain Constant Surveillance Of Water And Pool Deck Areas By 10-10 Scanning
  • Assist Swimmers In Distress
  • Provide Emergency Medical Assistance As Trained To Any Person On The YMCA Premise As Necessary
  • Provide Support To Swim Lessons And Aquatic Programs Instructors
  • Take And Record Chemical Readings Set Forth By Branch
  • Know And Operate Pool Equipment As Required (I.e. Lane Lines, Chair Lift)
  • Enforce And Educate Members About Aquatic Rules And Procedures Set Forth By Branch
  • Provides Exceptional Customer Service And Fosters Connections With Members
  • Participating And Satisfactory Completion Of In-Service Trainings

Qualifications
  • Must Be At Least 16 Years Old
  • Ability To Obtain A Criminal Record Clearance, If Over 18 Years Of Age
  • High School Diploma Or Equivalent; Valid Work Permit Required If A Minor
  • Previous Work Experience Preferred
  • Must Be Able To Complete YMCA Swim Test And Pass Entry Written Test
  • Possess A Basic-Level Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) Certification From One Of The Following Organizations: Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard, YMCA, Ellis & Associates International Lifeguard Training Program™, Boy Scouts Of America (BSA), StarGuard ELITE, United States Lifesaving Association (USLA). Ability To Transition To Red Cross Certification Within 90 Days
  • Complete Required Certifications Within 60 Days Of Hire
  • Complete All Required Branch And Position Specific Trainings As Required Within Two Weeks Of Hire
