How much do hourly barber jobs pay per hour?

As of Sep 5, 2026, the average hourly pay for hourly barber in Indiana is $22.80, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.08 and $27.60 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an hourly barber?

Hourly barbers are professional hair stylists who are paid an hourly wage rather than earning income through commissions or booth rental. They provide haircuts, shaves, beard trims, and other grooming services to clients, typically in a barbershop or salon setting. Working on an hourly basis can offer more financial stability and predictable income compared to commission-based jobs. Hourly barbers may also receive additional benefits such as paid time off or health insurance, depending on their employer.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an hourly barber?

To thrive as an Hourly Barber, you need strong haircutting, shaving, and grooming skills, usually backed by a state barber license or relevant certification. Familiarity with barbering tools, sanitation protocols, and appointment scheduling systems is essential. Excellent customer service, active listening, and time management skills help barbers build client relationships and maintain a steady workflow. These abilities ensure high-quality service, client satisfaction, and career growth in a competitive environment.

How does working as an hourly barber differ from commission-based or booth rental arrangements?

As an hourly barber, you receive a steady wage based on the number of hours worked, regardless of the number of clients you serve. This provides more predictable income and often includes additional employee benefits, such as paid time off or health insurance, depending on the employer. In contrast, commission-based or booth rental barbers rely on client volume and personal marketing to generate income, which can fluctuate. Hourly barbers typically work as part of a team in a salon or barbershop, collaborating closely with colleagues and following a set schedule.

Do hourly barbers get paid hourly or per cut?

Hourly barbers are typically paid a fixed hourly wage, regardless of the number of haircuts they perform. Some barbers may also earn tips or work on commission, but standard pay is usually hourly. This pay structure helps ensure consistent income and is common in barbershops and salons.

How much do hourly barbers earn an hour?

Hourly barbers typically earn between $10 and $25 per hour, depending on experience, location, and whether they work independently or for a salon. Tips can also significantly increase total earnings, and many barbers are paid on a combination of hourly wage and commission or tips.

Is 23 too old to become an hourly barber?

There is no age limit to becoming an hourly barber. Many barbers start their careers at various ages, and skills, certification, and experience are more important than age. As long as you meet the licensing requirements and develop your barbering skills, you can pursue this profession at 23 or older.
