Hourly Atv Tour Guide information

What does an hourly ATV tour guide do?

An Hourly ATV Tour Guide leads groups of tourists or clients on all-terrain vehicle (ATV) excursions, ensuring their safety while providing information about the local area, wildlife, and points of interest. Guides are responsible for instructing participants on ATV operation, enforcing safety protocols, and managing the pace and route of the tour. They may also perform basic maintenance checks on vehicles and respond to emergencies as needed. The job often requires strong communication skills, knowledge of the terrain, and the ability to handle unexpected situations. Most positions are seasonal or hourly, with work schedules varying based on tour bookings and weather conditions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an hourly ATV tour guide?

To thrive as an Hourly ATV Tour Guide, you need strong knowledge of ATV operation, basic maintenance, local terrain, and safety practices, often supported by a valid driver’s license and sometimes first aid certification. Familiarity with GPS devices, communication radios, and reservation management systems is typically required. Excellent communication, leadership, and customer service skills are crucial for engaging guests and ensuring a safe, enjoyable experience. These competencies are vital to guarantee guest safety, provide memorable tours, and maintain the reputation of the tour provider.

What are some common challenges faced by hourly ATV tour guides, and how can they be managed effectively?

Hourly ATV tour guides often encounter challenges such as managing groups with varying skill levels, ensuring safety on unpredictable terrain, and adapting tours to changing weather conditions. Effective communication and strong leadership skills are essential for guiding groups safely and keeping everyone engaged. Guides also need to stay updated on route conditions and be prepared to handle minor mechanical issues or emergencies. Building rapport with guests and staying attentive during tours help create a positive and memorable experience.

Job description

Seasonal Full-Time During Peak Season / Off-Season Work Available

Estimated Annual Earning Potential for Strong Performers: $45,000 –$70,000 consisting of $20 Hourly Pay + Tips + Performance Bonuses

Desert Wolf Tours is a top-rated outdoor adventure company offering guided Tomcar UTV tours and live-fire machine gun experiences in the Sonoran Desert.

This is a seasonal, high-earning lifestyle job for the right mechanically inclined, firearms-competent person who wants outdoor work, rugged equipment, guests, UTVs, machine guns, and seasonal hospitality — not a desk job.

This is not a “fun outdoor job” where you simply entertain guests. Our guests are here to have fun. Our team is here to deliver a safe, clean, organized, professional experience every time.

The people who do best here are practical, dependable problem solvers with common sense, mechanical aptitude, firearms discipline, attention to detail, and the ability to work with guests.

If you are a “MacGyver type” who can keep your head, figure things out, follow procedures, and take care of equipment and guests, this may be a great fit.

Important: This Is Seasonal Hospitality Work

Our business is seasonal, like many Scottsdale/Phoenix tourism, resort, and hospitality businesses.

During peak season, the workload is heavy. Weekends and holidays are required. Vacations may not be available during certain high-demand periods. When guests are here, we are working.

During the slower summer months, the workload is much lighter. Tour volume drops significantly, and desert shooting shuts down during the hot summer months due to Bureau of Land Management restrictions. That means no machine gun shoots during that period.

The default model is seasonal: guide/instructors work hard during the busy season, earn strong tips, and then have a much lighter summer schedule.

Some people are fine with that. They manage their money, take time off in the summer, travel, pick up other work, or enjoy the slower schedule.

Off-season work may be available, but only for people who are truly productive and useful in the shop. We cannot provide hours just for the sake of providing hours.

If you are a real contributor with mechanical ability, off-season work may include UTV maintenance, repairs, detailing, bodywork, painting, cleaning, organization, facility work, firearms maintenance, and operational support.

The more useful you are when tours slow down, the more valuable you are to the company.

The Job

This position includes three major roles:

  • Adventure Guide — Lead guests on guided Tomcar UTV desert tours
  • Firearms Instructor — Safely instruct guests during machine gun experiences
  • Field Mechanic / Operations Support — Help inspect, clean, maintain, repair, prep, and troubleshoot vehicles, firearms, tools, equipment, and facilities

During the busy season, this is primarily a guest-facing guide/instructor role.

During slower periods, available work shifts toward maintenance, cleaning, detailing, repairs, shop work, bodywork, painting, organization, and operational support.

This is a “fish when the fish are biting” job. When the season is busy, we are busy. When the season slows down, the schedule gets lighter unless you bring real off-season value.

Mechanical Ability Is Critical

Our tours operate on rugged Sonoran Desert trails. Our UTVs, firearms, radios, tools, and support equipment are used hard in dusty, rocky, real-world conditions.

Things can and do happen in the field.

The difference between a professional off-road guide and a “Disneyland” off-road guide is equipment competence.

We need someone who can recognize problems early, troubleshoot simple issues, make smart field decisions, and keep the guest experience moving whenever possible.

If you are not good with mechanical equipment, tools, vehicles, firearms, and troubleshooting, this is probably not the right job.

Firearms Competence Is Critical

This position requires serious firearms responsibility.

We use multiple machine gun platforms, each with its own operating system, cleaning requirements, inspection points, and wear parts.

We do not expect every applicant to already know every firearm we use. We do expect the right person to learn our platforms properly.

That means watching required videos, reading procedures, cleaning firearms thoroughly, reassembling them correctly, inspecting parts, troubleshooting malfunctions, and asking questions instead of guessing.

Firearms experience alone is not enough.

The wrong person says, “I know guns,” skips the training, makes assumptions, and creates problems.

The right person says, “Show me your procedure,” learns the platform, verifies his work, and does it correctly.

Avoidable mistakes caused by guessing, skipping procedures, poor cleaning, careless reassembly, or failing to ask questions are not acceptable here.

Guest Service Matters

This is still a hospitality job.

Our guests are paying for a memorable, safe, professional experience. You need to be comfortable speaking with guests, giving clear instructions, maintaining control of the group, and creating a positive experience.

However, personality alone is not enough.

We are not looking for someone who only has the gift of gab. We are looking for someone who can combine guest service with discipline, preparation, mechanical ability, firearms safety, and follow-through.

Daily Responsibilities May Include

  • Leading guided Tomcar UTV tours
  • Instructing guests on live-fire machine gun experiences
  • Performing pre-tour and post-tour vehicle inspections
  • Troubleshooting UTV or equipment issues in the field
  • Cleaning, fueling, staging, and preparing UTVs
  • Cleaning, inspecting, maintaining, and correctly reassembling firearms
  • Preparing range equipment, radios, tools, tablets, and guest gear
  • Opening and closing the guest facility
  • Cleaning and stocking restrooms, drinks, snacks, supplies, and guest areas
  • Following written checklists and company procedures
  • Helping with UTV detailing, bodywork, painting, repairs, shop work, and facility projects during slower periods

Some parts of the job are exciting. Some parts are repetitive. Some parts are dirty. All of them matter.

Tips and Compensation

This position is similar to a restaurant, resort, or seasonal tourism job.

Tips are a major part of compensation during the busy season. For strong guides and instructors, tips can be substantial and may represent half or more of annual income.

Estimated annual earning potential for strong performers is $50,000–$70,000+, depending on schedule, guest volume, performance, tips, and off-season usefulness.

Compensation includes:

  • $20 Hourly pay
  • Guest tips
  • Performance bonuses

Tips are earned through preparation, safety, professionalism, guest care, equipment competence, and operational excellence — not personality alone.

You May Be a Good Fit If You Are

  • Mechanically inclined
  • Practical and resourceful
  • Good with tools, vehicles, firearms, and equipment
  • Serious about safety
  • Detail-oriented
  • Calm under pressure
  • Comfortable working outdoors
  • Comfortable working with guests
  • Willing to follow checklists, videos, manuals, and procedures
  • Willing to clean, stock, inspect, repair, and prepare
  • Flexible with seasonal workloads
  • Able to work hard during peak season and adapt to a lighter summer schedule
  • Someone who takes pride in being useful

You Will Not Be a Fit If You

  • Need guaranteed full-time year-round hours
  • Only want the fun parts of the job
  • Only want to work with guns
  • Only want to guide tours
  • Only want to earn tips
  • Are not mechanically inclined
  • Are not flexible when the workload changes
  • Do not want to work weekends or holidays during peak season
  • Need vacation flexibility during our busiest periods
  • Skip procedures, videos, manuals, or checklists
  • Guess instead of verifying
  • Cut corners when nobody is watching
  • Make excuses instead of solving problems
  • Create preventable “unforced errors”
  • Resist coaching or correction
  • Think cleaning, stocking, detailing, or shop work is beneath you

We are direct about this because we would rather be clear up front than waste your time or ours.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be at least 25 years old
  • Must live within reasonable commuting distance of Anthem, AZ
  • Must have a clean driving record for the past 5 years
  • Must be able to pass a firearms background check
  • Must have relevant firearms experience
  • Must have hands-on mechanical aptitude
  • Must be willing to work weekends and holidays during peak season
  • Must understand this is seasonal hospitality work with heavy and light periods
  • Must be flexible with seasonal workload changes
  • Must be able to follow procedures, checklists, videos, and manuals
  • Must be physically able to work outdoors in desert conditions
  • Must have a verifiable record of reliability and performance

Preferred Experience

  • Military, law enforcement, firearms instructor, range safety, or armorer experience
  • NRA certifications or equivalent firearms training
  • Machine gun, automatic weapon, or military firearms experience
  • UTV, ATV, off-road, powersports, small-engine, automotive, fleet, or equipment maintenance experience
  • Bodywork, painting, detailing, fabrication, shop, or equipment repair experience
  • Ranch, farm, construction, towing, recovery, or field operations experience
  • Hospitality, guiding, resort, restaurant, or guest-service experience

Veterans are encouraged to apply. This type of job can be a good fit for veterans who miss hands-on, mission-focused, outdoor, equipment-based work and do not want a traditional indoor or desk job. We may request a DD-214 to verify claimed military service.
