Summary of Position
To teach baking and pastry and/or culinary art courses as prescribed by institutional policies and perform operational duties within the respective areas of responsibilities.
Education and Experience
  • Associate's degree from a nationally, regionally or identified at the state level accredited institution of higher education required in baking and pastry or related field.
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Valid National Restaurant Association ServSafe certificate must be acquired within six months.
  • Must hold or obtain a valid Bell County Food worker's card or obtain the card within one month.
  • Minimum 3 years of culinary specific work experience is required.
  • Prior college level teaching experience is preferred.

Knowledge Skills and Ability
  • Must have knowledge of cake and pastry production, cake decorating, breads and rolls, food production, sanitation, and supervision.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in subject matter being taught; ability to communicate effectively with students in a clear manner; ability to give academic and vocational guidance to students as needed.
  • Must have a proficiency to communicate in oral and written English.
  • Must be neat in appearance and exhibit positive professional attitude.
  • Demonstrated managerial skills.
  • Must be competent in the use of computer technology.
  • Must possess, depending on course instruction, some of the following skills and knowledge; pastry production, gumpaste, royal icing, sugar flowers, cake decorating, bread production, nutrition, table arrangement, food production, food service and bakery operations.
  • Must be punctual, dependable, and have the ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Must be willing to work flexible and non-standard hours and work under exacting conditions.

Essential Functions
  • Teach courses in accordance with departmental guidelines and attend department meetings.
  • Develop a class plan for teaching assigned courses.
  • On the first day of class provide each student a syllabus which includes general course objectives; list of instructional materials required and/or optional, specific course requirements, number and type of exams; and how the semester grade will be determined.
  • On the first day of class provide each student with a course calendar which lists daily reading assignments, exam dates, and assignment due dates.
  • Teach each course according to syllabus and textbook.
  • Keep accurate records of student attendance and grades so that an evaluation may be made at any time on the progress of students.
  • Meet every scheduled class on time and develop instructional plans that will use the full period allocated to the class.
  • Maintain and submit necessary preliminary and final grade rolls by deadlines set by the Registrar.
  • Give prior notification to the Program Coordinator of the necessity, if any, to be absent from class, and provide a substitute instructor meeting SACS credential requirement.
  • Develop and administer a minimum of two examinations and any other course material as needed.
  • Treat all students fairly and with respect.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator.
  • Continue to update and revise course content and teaching methodology in order to maintain currency and relevance.
  • Maintain familiarity with current texts, materials, teaching aids and techniques relative to courses within the discipline and recommend their adoption when appropriate.
  • Meet with students as needed by appointment.
  • Promote college programs in the community.
  • Keep in strictest confidence all confidential information which may include any materials, information or data supplied by CTCD or other individuals or entities.
