Position Title: Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN)
Department: Surgical Services / Operating Room

Reports To: OR Nurse Manager / Director of Surgical Services
Position Summary
The Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN) provides specialized nursing care to surgical patients before, during, and after operative procedures. The OR RN collaborates with surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical technologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe, effective, and efficient surgical care while maintaining sterile technique and patient safety standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare operating rooms for surgical procedures by ensuring proper equipment, instruments, and supplies are available and sterile.
  • Assess patients prior to surgery and review medical histories, allergies, and surgical consents.
  • Serve as a circulating nurse and/or scrub nurse during surgical procedures.
  • Monitor patient condition and maintain patient safety throughout surgical procedures.
  • Assist surgeons and surgical team members during operations.
  • Maintain sterile field and adhere to infection prevention and aseptic techniques.
  • Administer medications, IV fluids, and treatments as ordered.
  • Document surgical procedures, patient responses, and nursing care accurately in electronic medical records.
  • Perform instrument, sponge, and needle counts according to policy.
  • Coordinate patient transfer and provide post-operative handoff communication to recovery room staff.
  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations and surgical complications.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
Education
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
Licensure & Certifications
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred.
  • Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) certification preferred.
Experience
  • Previous operating room or perioperative nursing experience preferred.
  • Experience in circulating and/or scrubbing surgical procedures preferred.
  • New graduates may be considered for perioperative training programs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of surgical procedures, sterile technique, and perioperative patient care.
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and focused in high-pressure situations.
  • Knowledge of surgical instruments, equipment, and safety protocols.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand for extended periods during surgical procedures.
  • Ability to lift, move, and position patients and equipment.
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity required for surgical assistance and documentation.
  • Ability to respond quickly during emergencies.
Work Environment
This position works in a fast-paced operating room environment with exposure to surgical equipment, bodily fluids, infectious diseases, and emergency situations. Call shifts, weekends, holidays, and extended hours may be required.
