The Maintenance I position is responsible for performing scheduled preventive maintenance on equipment throughout the hospital. Responsible for general mechanical, electrical and plumbing task, inspections, monitoring activities, servicing, making repairs and overhaul of equipment and facilities. Plan, organize and complete complex projects. Serves as a subject matter expert, with little to no supervision, in areas such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, etc. Works closely with Department Management to assist with daily planning of lower-level projects.

Responsibilities
  • Repair pipes, fittings, and plumbing fixtures to maintain the heating, water, gas and drainage systems throughout the hospital as assigned.
  • Responds to fire alarms with all-purpose fire extinguishers; responds to disaster alerts and drills; maintains internal security and continuation of utilities during these emergencies.
  • Assist other trade personnel as needed in handling materials on major repair or installation projects.
  • Consults with supervisor concerning assignments and keeps supervisor informed of activities, needs and problems.
  • Assembles moves, installs, and repairs equipment, furniture and fixtures used throughout the hospital; responds to problems that arise.
  • Ensures adequate levels of supplies, materials, equipment; orders/requisitions tools and materials as needed for assigned work; advises supervisor when reordering necessary.
  • Operates and maintains boilers. Observes various meters and gauges and takes appropriate action for safe operation. Follows preventative maintenance schedule.
  • Keeps log on each boiler and chillers. Reports major repairs, needs and unsafe conditions to manager.
  • Plans, organizes, and completes complex projects in the areas of electrical, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, carpentry, etc. and acts as of the subject matter expert for other staff in these areas.
  • Performs periodic inspection of mechanical rooms throughout the hospital to insure proper operation of heat, air conditioning and ventilation and medical support equipment (e.g., vacuum pumps, air compressors). Monitors equipment gauges and meter; inspect equipment, steam pipes and machinery to ascertain leakage, faulty operation, irregularities, malfunctions and leaking water; makes and records repairs or adjustments.

Qualifications
Education:
  • High school graduate or equivalent required

Licensure/Certification:
  • Valid Iowa driver's license for at least three years with an acceptable or clear rating according to the Motor Vehicle Record chart required (see below).
    • Must have a minimum of two years driving experience with no record of DUI, DWI, or similar alcohol or drug related offenses over the past five years.
    • No record of reckless driving, careless driving, speeding over 15 miles above the speed limit, fleeing or eluding a police officer, chemical test refusal, leaving the scene of an accident, driving after revocation or suspension, or passing a stopped school bus in the last five years.
