What is a hospice RN?

Hospice Registered Nurses (Hospice RNs) are specialized nurses who provide compassionate care to patients facing terminal illnesses. They focus on managing pain and symptoms, offering emotional support, and ensuring comfort for both patients and their families during end-of-life care. Hospice RNs often work as part of a multidisciplinary team to develop personalized care plans, educate families on what to expect, and help maintain the best quality of life possible for their patients. Their role is critical in addressing both the physical and emotional needs of patients in hospice settings.

What is the difference between Hospice Rn vs Palliative Care Nurse?

AspectHospice RnPalliative Care Nurse
CertificationsRN license, hospice certification often preferredRN license, palliative care certification optional
Work EnvironmentHospice agencies, home care, inpatient hospice unitsHospice, hospitals, outpatient clinics
Patient FocusEnd-of-life care, comfort, and supportSymptom management, quality of life, across illness stages
Job RoleProvide compassionate end-of-life care, emotional supportManage symptoms, coordinate care, improve patient comfort

Hospice RNs primarily focus on end-of-life care in hospice settings, providing comfort and emotional support to terminally ill patients. Palliative Care Nurses also manage symptoms and improve quality of life but work across various stages of illness and in different healthcare settings. While both roles require RN licensure and similar certifications, their scope and patient focus differ, making each role unique in patient care.

What are some common challenges hospice RNs face when providing care, and how can they effectively manage them?

Hospice RNs often encounter emotionally charged situations as they support patients and families through end-of-life care. Managing strong emotions, facilitating difficult conversations, and addressing diverse spiritual or cultural needs can be challenging. Effective hospice nurses draw on strong communication skills, interdisciplinary teamwork, and self-care strategies to navigate these challenges while ensuring compassionate, patient-centered care. Regular debriefings and collaboration with social workers, chaplains, and other team members help support both the nurse and the families during this process.

How much money do hospice RNs make?

Hospice RNs typically earn an average annual salary ranging from $60,000 to $80,000, depending on experience, location, and certification. They often work in home or facility settings, providing end-of-life care and requiring strong communication and assessment skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a hospice RN, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hospice RN, you need a solid nursing foundation, current RN licensure, and specialized knowledge in end-of-life care. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), pain management protocols, and symptom assessment tools is often required. Compassion, emotional resilience, and strong communication skills are vital for supporting patients and families during difficult times. These competencies ensure compassionate, effective care and help guide patients and loved ones through the hospice journey with dignity.

Job description

WHO WE ARE

We are a nurse-founded hospice organization and a pioneer in end-of-life care since 1978. We are carers who advocate for our patients and their loved ones at the bedside. We take care of each other. We are proud to make a difference.

We are VITAS.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

As a home care RN, you will do the critically important job of ensuring hospice patients are comfortable, while forging compassionate, meaningful connections. This is important work that comes with huge responsibility. Patients and families trust VITAS RNs to guide them through one of life’s most difficult experiences, and honoring that trust will be your highest priority..

You will be a respected member of our team, both as a caregiver and as a hospice educator. You will be entrusted with the autonomy to make care decisions at the bedside, ensuring not a moment is wasted in bringing comfort to your patients. You will help patients and their loved ones understand and embrace the palliative—rather than curative—nature of hospice and the benefits of comfort-focused end-of-life care.

WHERE YOU’LL WORK

Each day is different for our home care RNs. You will spend most of your time caring for hospice patients in their home, ALF, nursing home facility,  hospital or medical facility, adjusting your schedule based on their needs. The total amount of visits may vary per day but on average it is 4 to 6.

About once a week you'll come to the office to meet with the rest of your interdisciplinary team: the social workers, physicians, chaplains, and nurses who work together to provide whole-person support for the patients and families we serve.

  • Monday- Friday
  • 8am- 5pm
  • Mileage Reimbursement: Yes, 0.67/ Mile
  • Benefits: Yes, Medical, Dental, Vision, 401K, HSA, FSA, Tuition Reimbursement, PTO

WHAT’S EXPECTED FROM YOU

A VITAS nurse is the end-of-life caregiver everyone deserves. In addition to having your RN license and the qualifications described below, you will embody compassion, empathy, and dedication. You will keep patients at the center of your practice, doing your best each day in service of our mission: Meeting people with comfort and dignity at the end of their life’s journey.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE REGISTERED NURSE, RN
