JOB SUMMARY

The Safety Manager - Concrete serves as an embedded safety leader within Pankowโ€™s self-perform concrete operations. This role partners directly with Concrete Operations leadership, Superintendents, and craft professionals to strengthen planning, improve execution, and advance Pankowโ€™s Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) culture.

This position supports multiple concurrent concrete projects including buildings, parking structures, elevated decks, slabs-on-grade, foundations, and structural frames with a primary focus on Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) prevention, proactive risk/injury management, and continuous operational improvement.

The Safety Manager functions as a field-based facilitator and trusted operational partner, integrating safety into production planning rather than operating solely as a compliance resource.

JOB SCOPE & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Primary Accountabilities

OPERATIONAL PARTNERSHIP & FIELD LEADERSHIP

  • Serve as the dedicated safety partner to Pankow Concrete project teams.
  • Participate in preconstruction meetings, pull planning sessions, and lookahead planning processes.
  • Strengthen Pre-Task Planning (PTP) and Project Risk Profile (PRP) development.
  • Provide oversight during high-risk concrete activities including formwork, PT decks, crane and rigging operations, excavation, and silica control.

SERIOUS INJURY & FATALITY (SIF) PREVENTION

  • Identify and manage high-energy exposures aligned with the 8 Lethal Hazards.
  • Conduct focused risk reviews for critical lifts and complex sequencing operations.
  • Collaborate with field leadership to design practical and effective risk controls.

HOP CULTURE & LEARNING LEADERSHIP

  • Apply and reinforce Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) principles.
  • Facilitate Learning Teams following incidents and high-potential events.
  • Promote safe reporting and systems-based problem solving.

PLANNING & RISK ANTICIPATION

  • Review drawings and sequencing plans to proactively identify hazards.
  • Analyze leading indicators and incident trends to inform project planning.
  • Strengthen task-level hazard analysis and check-and-adjust processes.

INCIDENT MANAGEMENT & REGULATORY COMPLIANCE

  • Lead post-incident learning teams to drive continuous improvement in safety culture and operations.
  • Ensure compliance with Cal/OSHA and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Serve as subject matter expert in fall protection, scaffolding, excavation, cranes & rigging, and silica standards.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Training

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Safety, Construction Management, or related field preferred; or equivalent experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • CHST, ASP, or CSP required (or ability to obtain within defined timeframe).
  • Competent Person certifications in fall protection, excavation, scaffolding, silica, or related areas.
  • HOP training or demonstrated experience applying HOP principles preferred.

Work Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of safety-related experience.
  • 3+ years supporting concrete or heavy civil construction operations.
  • Experience overseeing safety across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Demonstrated success improving safety performance and reducing recordable incidents preferred.
