We provide secure, stable, and reliable infrastructure and applications that support the mission of the University. ITS supports and enables faculty research and teaching with the effective use of technology, simplifies the technology experience for all users, and identifies, manages, and mitigates technology risks for the University.


Job Information

Job Summary:

The Union Security Cabling Installation Technician is responsible for installing, programming, and maintaining electronic security systems, including cameras and card readers, at institutional sites. Working independently on most assignments, the technician demonstrates strong self-sufficiency and technical expertise in security cabling and device management.

Responsibilities:

  • Install and terminate security cabling (composite cables, Cat5e/6, coaxial, fiber optic) in accordance with project requirements.
  • Mount, connect, and calibrate security hardware, including cameras and card readers.
  • Program security systems such as access control panels and video surveillance equipment.
  • Conduct daily maintenance, inspections, and troubleshooting of security devices and associated cabling.
  • Interpret blueprints, site plans, and job specifications to ensure proper installation.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of work performed (service records, programming notes, and reports).
  • Uphold safety regulations, union guidelines, and client standards at all times.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, project managers, and other trades.
  • Participate in ongoing union training to stay current with security technology.

  • Work independently and manage assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Strong skills in programming and configuring security devices, such as cameras, card readers, and access panels.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to safe work practices and compliance.

Additional Responsibilities

Education, Experience, or Certifications:

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED required.

Experience:

  • Minimum two (2) years experience in security cabling installation or related low-voltage work.
  • Familiar with IP-based security systems.

Certifications and Licenses:

  • Local 134 C or B card journeyman electrician in good standing with the union.
  • BICSI, NICET, or manufacturer credentials preferred.
  • Technical proficiency in low-voltage electrical work.
  • Valid driver's license.

Technical Knowledge or Skills:

  • Proficient in computer, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Proficient in use of hand/power tools and test equipment.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Work takes place at institutional sites with exposure to confined spaces and heights.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and work on ladders.
  • May require travel between job sites.
