Summary:
The above compensation of $80,276 is based on eligible standard hours and eligible FLSA overtime hours worked on the 48 / 96 work schedule and 13 paid holidays, any change in hours worked will affect the final compensation total. Base salary for Firefighter/Paramedic before any overtime is $67,256.86
Under general supervision, the Firefighter/Paramedic responds to emergency situations to perform fire suppression, rescue, and advanced life support medical care. This position operates a variety of emergency apparatus, tools, and equipment and provides critical services during high-stress incidents in hazardous environments. Firefighter/Paramedics are responsible for maintaining operational readiness, participating in ongoing training, and upholding departmental protocols and safety standards.
Examples of Duties
Under general supervision:
  • Acts as a paramedic for emergency care; provides advanced life support services, including invasive and non-invasive medical procedures and treatments.
  • Performs assigned duties within their authorized scope of practice according to PPFD and Best EMS policies and standard operating guidelines (SOGs).
  • Inspects, maintains, and assures operational readiness of PPFD facilities, equipment, apparatus, and tools; notifies supervisors of any equipment issues.
  • Responds to emergency calls for service and performs fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical duties as required to mitigate emergency incidents.
  • Operates fire, rescue, medical, and life-saving tools, equipment, and apparatus safely and efficiently.
  • While wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), performs firefighting, rescue, and emergency response tasks under physically and emotionally demanding conditions, including extreme temperatures.
  • Uses SCBA and other respiratory protection equipment that may increase breathing effort; must be medically cleared and fit-tested per applicable standards (e.g., NFPA, OSHA).
  • Climbs multiple flights of stairs while wearing fire protective ensemble weighing at least 50 lbs. and carrying equipment or tools weighing an additional 20 to 40 lbs.
  • Performs critical, time-sensitive, and complex problem-solving tasks during physical exertion in hazardous, high-stress environments (e.g., dark, enclosed spaces, flashing lights, loud noise, fatigue).
  • Communicates clearly (e.g., giving and receiving verbal instructions) while wearing protective equipment and SCBA in high-noise, low-visibility, or wet environments (e.g., from hose lines or sprinkler systems).
  • Works in rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, which may exceed 24 hours, in accordance with labor regulations and departmental policy.
  • Attends required training programs to maintain and enhance skills, knowledge, and certifications.

Typical Qualifications
  • Education and Experience Requirements
    • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Required Licenses and Certifications
    • A valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License. Must have the ability to obtain a Class "B" exempt license as required by the department.
    • Firefighter / Paramedic: Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Basic Fire Certification and Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Licensed or Certified Paramedic.
    • Paramedic Only: DSHS Licensed or Certified Paramedic, with the ability to obtain TCFP Basic Fire Certification within one year of appointment.
    • Firefighter / EMT-Basic: TCFP Basic Fire Certification and DSHS EMT-Basic Certification.
    • Additional technical certifications and training may be required, depending on operational needs.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Knowledge of city operations, policies, procedures, and organizational structure, with the ability to acquire full understanding during the probationary period.
    • Familiarity with Fire Department standard operating guidelines (SOGs), EMS protocols, and medical control policies, to be developed within the probationary period.
    • Understanding of local geography, traffic patterns, and the location of streets, landmarks, and major facilities.
    • Ability to assess emergency incidents and apply appropriate firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical techniques based on building construction, occupancy, and incident context.
    • Proficiency in providing firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical services in high-stress, rapidly changing environments.
    • Ability to follow commands accurately and promptly under emergency conditions.
    • Strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities, particularly in complex and time-sensitive medical emergencies.
    • Knowledge of and ability to follow safe operational practices in hazardous environments.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective, respectful, and professional working relationships with colleagues and personnel from other emergency response agencies.
    • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, including the ability to give and receive clear instructions in noisy or chaotic environments.
    • Commitment to teamwork, continuous learning, and adherence to department values and public service ethics.

Supplemental Information
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Work is performed both outdoors and indoors, including emergency incident scenes and fire station facilities. The position requires strenuous physical effort and the ability to lift and move items weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Must be able to work weekdays, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts as assigned, including rotating and overnight schedules.
  • Exposure to toxic fumes, irritants, particulates, biological (e.g., infectious), and non-biological hazards, and/or heated gases, even while wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
  • Duties may include wearing full protective ensemble and SCBA while climbing ladders, operating at heights, walking or crawling in the dark along narrow or uneven surfaces, and working in proximity to electrical power lines or other hazards.
  • Emergency response situations may require extended periods of intense physical exertion without the benefit of warm-up, scheduled rest breaks, meals, access to medications, or hydration.
  • Must maintain a level of physical fitness that meets departmental standards. Reasonable accommodations may be made in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), where applicable.
