About the role:
The Associate Field PLC Engineer is an entry-level position designed for motivated individuals eager to build a career in PLC-based automation and mission-critical data center environments. This role provides hands-on learning opportunities in the deployment, commissioning, and support of PLC control systems under the direct guidance of senior field engineers. The Associate Field PLC Engineer works as part of a field team, developing foundational skills in Rockwell Automation platforms, control system validation, and client-site operations. This position requires 50-60% travel and offers a structured path toward advancement into the Field PLC Engineer role.
Key Responsibilities:
Field Support & Learning
  • Support field deployment and commissioning activities for PLC-based control systems under the guidance of senior engineers
  • Assist with point-to-point verification tasks including checking I/O signals, control sequences, and device connectivity
  • Participate in onsite testing and validation of PLC programs, HVAC control systems, and mechanical equipment integrations
  • Shadow experienced engineers during commissioning activities to build foundational knowledge of PLC systems
  • Assist with setup of programming laptops, Studio 5000 connections, and controller configurations
  • Perform basic checks of control panel wiring, I/O status, and communication network connectivity
  • Support go-live activities by monitoring system behavior, logging observations, and assisting senior engineers

Documentation & Reporting
  • Assist with documentation of commissioning activities, I/O verification logs, and test results
  • Gather and organize project artifacts including photos, redlines, wiring diagrams, and as-built records
  • Maintain accurate punch lists and track open items identified during commissioning
  • Support creation of turnover packages and project closeout documentation
  • Record field observations and communicate findings clearly to senior engineers

Client Site Operations
  • Maintain professional conduct and represent the company positively at all client sites
  • Assist senior engineers during client demonstrations and system walkthroughs
  • Follow all site safety requirements, electrical safety procedures, and facility access protocols
  • Communicate clearly with team members and escalate issues promptly and appropriately
  • Support interactions with contractors, vendors, and facility staff under senior engineer guidance

Personal Development
  • Actively pursue knowledge of PLC systems, Rockwell Automation platforms, and building automation fundamentals
  • Complete Rockwell Automation training courses and work toward Studio 5000 certification
  • Seek out mentorship from senior and lead engineers to accelerate technical development
  • Build familiarity with control system concepts including HVAC controls, electrical systems, and mechanical equipment integration
  • Develop understanding of industrial communication protocols including EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP, and DeviceNet

Qualifications:
  • 0-2 years of experience in PLC programming, industrial automation, electrical systems, or related technical field
  • Basic understanding of electrical concepts, control panels, and wiring diagrams
  • Eagerness to learn and grow in a fast-paced, field-based environment
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and ability to follow direction
  • Willingness and ability to travel 50-60%, including extended site assignments
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel domestically as needed
  • Strong attention to detail and systematic approach to tasks
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Instrumentation, or related technical field
  • Exposure to PLC programming, Rockwell Automation, or industrial control systems
  • Basic understanding of electrical schematics, control panel layouts, and I/O wiring
  • Coursework in controls, automation, or instrumentation
