Job description

The Mainframe DB2 Database Administrator and Application Architect will support complex enterprise systems across development, test, and production environments. This role requires strong technical depth in DB2 for z/OS, application architecture design, system integration, and problem-solving within a federal contracting environment. The DBA will work closely with analysts, developers, and technical leads to ensure system reliability, performance, and alignment with organizational standards.

This role is remote, with the expectation of participating in after-hours or weekend deployments and support activities when necessary.

Key Responsibilities
  • Mainframe - DB2 Database Administration (DBA)
    • Manage, configure, and maintain DB2 for z/OS databases across Development, Test, and Production.
    • Refresh datasets and environments to support testing cycles.
    • Develop database conversion routines to support new projects or modernization efforts.
    • Optimize system and application performance by tuning SQL queries, identifying bottlenecks, and monitoring resource consumption.
    • Plan and execute DB2 utilities such as REORG, RUNSTATS, LOAD, UNLOAD, COPY, and REBUILD INDEX.
    • Implement structural database changes (DDL), stored procedure modifications, and bind plans/packages.
    • Research and resolve abends, performance issues, and production defects.
    • Develop and execute SQL as needed to correct data issues.
    • Define and maintain backup and recovery strategies, perform DR drills, and ensure the integrity of data assets
  • Application Architecture & Design
    • Define enterprise application architecture inclusive of systems, web services, integration patterns, and data models.
    • Provide development support and mentorship to technical teams, conducting code and architecture reviews as needed.
    • Produce technical documentation including data models, process flows, and specifications for system changes.
    • Ensure solutions align with architectural standards, security requirements, and system performance goals.
  • Communication & Teamwork
    • Collaborate closely with analysts, developers, technical leads, and stakeholders on system design, task execution, quality, and delivery timelines.
    • Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
    • Support cross-functional teams by providing subject matter expertise during planning, development, and troubleshooting.

Requirements

Required Qualifications
  • Experience performing IT engineering tasks of moderate complexity under minimal supervision.
  • Strong DB2 database skills with hands-on database administration experience.
  • Experience in system architecture and application design.
  • Experience with both mainframe and distributed computing platforms.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical problems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across teams and maintain professional client-facing interactions.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with banking, financial, or loan processing systems.
  • Experience with Java, ASP, Cobol, JCL, and related legacy technologies.
