Job Description:
The Health Educator supports the Tobacco Program within the Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Program by providing evidence-based smoking cessation interventions (including counseling and support) to tobacco-dependent individuals based on their tobacco use history and current tobacco status. The position will work at the UF AHEC Office at UF's East Campus on Waldo Road and report directly to the Assistant Director of Education and Training Programs. The work of this position is funded by Tobacco Settlement Dollars from the Florida Department of Health, which specifies that supported employees must not be tobacco users.
About this Role
  • Serve as a trained Tobacco Treatment Specialist facilitating tobacco cessation classes at UF Health clinical facilities and virtually via Zoom. Assists in coordinating and scheduling tobacco cessation classes and maintains communications with UF Health clinic points of contact at each site.
  • Serve as the primary intake specialist for incoming and outgoing client pre-referral and referral calls to describe available tobacco cessation services, motivates the tobacco user to quit, assesses patient's health risks, and pre-registers participants for AHEC tobacco cessation services.
  • Conduct reminder calls for cessation classes and follow-up calls for participants. Acts as a point of contact for the distribution of post-course Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT).
  • Responsible for program data collection and management, including NRT inventory and distribution, attendance, and other program data.
  • Participate in various health fairs, events, and presentations to present tobacco health education and promote the tobacco control program and tobacco-free campus.

Expected Salary:
$49,000 - $52,000 annually; commensurate with education and experience.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred:
The ideal candidate will possess:
  • Demonstrated experience in a health-related field, with interest or background in tobacco prevention and cessation programs.
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in Health Education and Behavior, Public Health, Nursing, or a related field.
  • Advanced proficiency in computer skills, including Microsoft Office, databases, and virtual platforms such as Zoom.
  • Experience delivering engaging and effective presentations to diverse audiences.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to assess, engage, and motivate individuals toward successful behavior change, particularly in tobacco cessation.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to collaborate effectively as a member of a team, actively contributing to shared goals and supporting colleagues to deliver high-quality health services.
  • Detail-oriented, ensuring accuracy and thoroughness in all tasks and responsibilities.
  • Experience as an instructor, facilitator, or group leader in health education or behavior change programs.
  • Experience with community health programs or campaigns, such as health fairs, outreach events, or public health education, promoting wellness and healthy behaviors.
