What is an HMI Developer job?

An HMI (Human-Machine Interface) Developer designs, develops, and maintains user interfaces for industrial systems, machines, or automation processes. They work with software tools to create intuitive and efficient control panels that operators use to monitor and interact with machinery. HMI Developers often collaborate with engineers and technicians to ensure seamless integration with PLCs, SCADA systems, and other automation components. Their role requires expertise in UI/UX design, programming languages, and industry-specific protocols to enhance usability and efficiency in industrial environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Hmi Developer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an HMI Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages such as C/C++, Java, or Python, and a solid understanding of human-machine interface concepts, automation systems, and UI/UX design principles. Familiarity with industry-standard HMI development tools (e.g., Siemens WinCC, Wonderware, Rockwell FactoryTalk) and protocols like OPC or SCADA, as well as relevant certifications, is often required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies are crucial for developing intuitive and reliable interfaces that optimize user experience and ensure safe, efficient industrial operations.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an HMI Developer?

HMI Developers typically spend their days designing, developing, and testing graphical user interfaces for industrial or automation systems, ensuring both functionality and usability. They often work closely with control engineers, project managers, and end-users to gather requirements and implement features that meet operational needs. Regular tasks may include configuring visual displays, integrating real-time data from machinery or processes, troubleshooting issues, and updating existing systems based on user feedback. Collaboration and continuous communication with other team members are key aspects of ensuring successful project delivery.

Job description

Are you the go-to problem solver when systems get complex?
  • Do you see the big picture across electrical, mechanical, and ITโ€”and love bringing it all together?
  • Can you guide a team from whiteboard concept to reliable, commissioned systems in airports and industrial facilities?
  • Are you equally comfortable reviewing AutoCAD drawings, writing PLC/HMI code, and rolling up your sleeves in the field?

If so, CLX Engineering wants you leading our most challenging automation and controls integration projectsโ€”owning the architecture, the execution, and the customer relationship from start to finish.

Role snapshot
  • Technical leadership across complex automation projects, from design through commissioning.
  • System architecture that harmonizes controls hardware, networks, and data interfaces.
  • Primary technical contact for customers and project managers; you set the technical course.
  • Mentorship that grows engineers and uplifts standards and best practices.
  • Field presence to diagnose issues and deliver long-term solutions.
What you will do
  • Lead technical execution and keep engineering and field teams aligned to plan.
  • Develop/review PLC and HMI applications, electrical designs, and documentation.
  • Direct design reviews and drive consistency through standards and best practices.
  • Investigate complex issues and implement robust fixes that stick.
  • Support installation, startup, commissioning, and on-site troubleshooting.
Who you are
  • 5+ years in automation, controls, or systems integration.
  • Confident PLC programmer and HMI developer with hands-on troubleshooting chops.
  • Experienced integrator of controls hardware, industrial networks, and data systems.
  • Natural leader who has run technical teams and complex projects.
  • Clear communicator with a professional, customer-facing presence.
  • Accountable, decisive, and comfortable operating with minimal oversight.
  • Ignition SCADA familiarity is a notable advantage, not a requirement.
Fieldwork is part of the job

This role is hands-on. Expect to collaborate on installation activities, mount enclosures, terminate cables, and assist with equipment startup and commissioning alongside technicians and field crews.

Travel & support
  • Travel to support implementation, commissioning, and customer support.
  • Typical annual travel averages 30โ€“50% depending on project load.
  • Per diem provided while traveling.
  • Flexible scheduling and time arrangements when extended hours or travel are required.
Core strengths
